Galleywood v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 143 runs

Match report A cultured innings of 141 by Nindi, backed up by a solid bowling and fielding performance got our 2013 season off to a satisfactory start against a below strength Galleywood.

The weather forecast was for prolonged showers from 1pm to 6pm - therefore we were all pleasantly surprised by losing only 20 minutes to a downpour midway through our innings. Winning the toss and persuaded to bat by the opposing captain (thank you), we got off to a respectable start scoring 5 an over, mainly due to Nindi's belligerent approach, while yours truly was searching for some much needed form for future battles. We added 153 for the first wicket.

Swanie instructed we raise the tempo and Nindi duly obliged, racing to a very fast hundred and beyond. He retired himself to give others a go with a handful of overs left. Swanie negotiated we bat the full 40 overs after the game had been reduced by 2 overs at the weather break!

After tea, Galleywood were soon in trouble losing early wickets to some fine consistent bowling by Fitzwater J. The opposition never looked like overhauling our total. A very pleasing sight was that of younger, agile fielders chasing every drive and keen not to give away easy singles. This created pressure, resulting in opposing batsmen attempting to hit their way out of trouble. All the bowlers are to be commended (Clout, Fitwaters, Tucker, Swan and Harman). A special mention to Josh, taking a fine catch over his shoulder and to Sam for calling for a steepler and then taking it with ease. Finally to Ryan, his début match for the 1st team behind the stumps. His glove-work is beyond his years, but what was most impressive was his footwork, such a pleasure to see a keeper not diving unnecessarily down the leg side.

We have a fine squad of players and I look forward to reporting of further successes, starting at Hatfield Peveral next week.
ps. A Patel 2 for 2 top of the bowling averages ;)
