Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Ingatestone & Fryerning 1st XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 51 runs
Match report
Not an easy match report to write. On one hand, we racked up 266 runs, on a pitch which could be described as two or three paced depending on the area of the fairy ring one hit, and won the game by a relatively comfortable 51 runs. On the other hand nothing was quite right. We probably left runs out there despite it being a good score, I think we could have made more. We dropped 2 important catches which cost a significant amount of runs, maybe the first time that’s happened to us all year. Our bowling was similar to last year, too many bad balls interspersed with the good, easing the pressure. It almost felt a bit complacent, after a dominant batting display and a good start with the ball it was inevitable we would win. It doesn’t exactly work like that. On top of all of this I didn’t exactly have the best game of my captaincy to date to compound things.
Dave and Si have formed a rather assertive opening partnership this year, managing all types of tracks and conditions, much to my enjoyment batting at 3. This week was no different as their partnership of 113 a little over 20 overs set the game up perfectly for the rest of the batsmen. Dave would be the first to admit he left runs out there, skying the ball down deep square legs throat after being well set on 84. We almost expect a good score at a good a rate from him every week.
Si came and went unfortunately, bowled off his legs by Pudney whose bowling got better as his spell went on. Dan and I looked to set us up for the final push, getting us to 183 before I played an unnecessary shot. It looked increasingly hard to get going on that pitch and the middle order all contributed in a quick manner but none were quite able to get themselves in. 266 looked like a good score after being put into bat in testing overhead conditions and a pitch becoming tougher to bat on.
We opened up well, had them 3 down in not very much time at all and the run rate was climbing considerably. Josh and Tucks bowled very well in their opening spell, Josh in particular probably deserved more wickets although Tucks create more chances. One such chance being a looped catch to Ollie Fitz at mid on, the less said about the nonchalant one handed attempt in front of his eyes the better.
This is the point I felt that we fell away at. The intensity just seemed to go out of the team. Swanny, Chappy, Jamie and Ollie all bowled well at points but let the pressure off at other points. All fully deserved their wickets but we couldn’t create the pressure or achieve the consistency we’ve become accustomed to this year. Brailey batted well for his 62, the first 50 against us this year, but he was dropped. Bates hit some huge sixes and scored 33 but he too was dropped. I think we could have had them all out for 170, probably churlish of me.
The verdict
We played well enough. A win’s a win.
Whilst both true, I feel like they are dangerous statements to make. It might not be enough next week, or for the rest of the season. I understand we’re an amateur sports team but we all put enough time and effort into this team and our own performances that it would be a shame if we started dropping games due to complacency. Terling away next week will not be an easy task, they’ve won 5 of the last 7 and are always tricky opponents. Bentley the week after, who are chasing hard. The next 2 weeks are important.
YES BANK Maximum sixes: Dave Clout. Dan and Dave both hit 2 apiece but the tiebreaker is distance. I think one of Dave’s went way over long leg, the longest boundary on the day.
Vivo IPL catch of the match: J Fitz. Surprisingly I know. Slight mix up in communication with Gary resulted in a well held catch at point.
FBB stylish player of the day: D. Bloom. Run a ball 46 with 2 beautiful sixes.
MOTM: DC. Again. 84 off 69 balls.
BSW Marquees Muppet of the day: Oliver Fitzwater. Fielding in the dip isn’t that easy but its not quite as hard as that misjudgment.
