South Woodham Ferrers 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets

Match report A blistering 76 off 55 balls from Luke Tanner and a cultured unbeaten 84 off 74 balls from Lewis, gave us a much needed win against 1st XI opposition, couple that we Stock beating Brookweald, a thoroughly happy weekend.

Ryan standing in for Neil, won the toss and rightly decided to we should field. Joe back in side had Ja Royce edging between Ryan and myself at 1st slip before he had reached double figures. In the following over JT induced Rowe to Ryan low to his left, unable to hold on. JT bowled economically however Joe was unable to tame Ja Royce as he moved smoothly to 55.

PA, replacing Joe stem the run rate and the introduction of Lewis lured Royce to a wild slogg - 75 for 1 off 15 overs. With Lewis (2-54) and PA (2-22), we began to get some control of the game and regular wickets falling, we had the opposition 163-5 of 33 overs. There was a real prospect of chasing 210, 220 at most. We conceded 47 off the last 5 overs, which was uncharacteristic on recent form. Our fielding was below last week's effort. Special mention to PA who bowled beautifully and took two catches, one fine effort running to his left on the mid-wicket boundary.

So we sat at tea requiring 251 to win, without Phil and Neil in our line-up. For once we got off to a good start with both Nindi and yours truly looking in decent touch. Maybe it's easier to chase bigger totals as you have to be positive from the start. Just as the South Essex voice was being muted, Nindi nibbled one to the keeper, 36-1 off 8.1 overs

In came Luke Tanner, personal I've only played once before with Luke, where he took two good catches and then unable to finish an over for continuous waist high no balls! Third ball was dispatched off the back foot a-la Gordon Greenidge (Google him). He had decided that anything within driving territory had to go (Ok I may have advised him to "give it a go"). It was marvellous entertainment and I felt I'd let him down by hitting one straight to cover when totally set, 75-2 off 17.1 overs.

In previous weeks I said we will not win games chasing unless one of the top four makes a hundred or at least two of us make a 70-80 plus. Lewis has been in sublime form this season with the bat and he continue to hold our batting together with great maturity. Luke continued to blaze away, eventually falling for a game changing 76. Another 104 required off 20.3 overs. Ryan didn't last long and the equation was 79 off 15.3 overs when Matty walked to the wicket.
It was a pleasure to see two young batsmen not get flustered and keep the score board ticking. Lewis (84*) maintained his tempo and Matty's (23) energetic running kept us ahead of the asking rate.

We got home with 10 balls to spare, much to the shock of the opposition. Our luck clearly changed in our innings as the opposition dropped at least a half a dozen catches I can recall. There is saying about swings and roundabouts.

Finally a week where the rest of the club and celebrate a 2nd team victory, while the two 'invincible' elevens march on. Our Chairman made a interesting observation and testimony to having a third eleven. Had we not had a third team, Luke Tanner probably wouldn't be playing cricket at Great Waltham.

In the coming weeks we will be calling on the talent in the third team as the holiday season starts. Next week we have an important home game against Great Totham 2nd eleven. We have the squad to beat them, another three wins will cement our place in this division for next season.

There is a wonderful atmosphere at the club and some great performances from our younger members. Let's continue to give them an opportunity.

Have a great week.
