Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Galleywood 3rd XI on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report After several weeks of sun-baked weather some sense of normality returned to the English summer with a fresh, breezy day greeting both teams as they arrived at Hatfield Peverel CC for this Division 10 encounter. Revenge spurred the Waltham boys on following the reverse fixture back in May, the day that Klopp’s boys had failed to bring the European silverware back to Merseyside. We certainly didn’t want any more of Deano’s tears today though and the skipper focused his boys on the tough task ahead of overcoming a strong Galleywood side.

With a strong wind buffeting across the ground Galleywood commenced their innings but struggled to make much headway early on as Kent (9-4-17-0) and Tokley Jr (9-0-37-2) stifled the opposition with some consistent line and length bowling that Glenn McGrath would have been proud of. Pressure leads to mistakes and wickets soon followed with Tokley forcing a loose drive from Mower (9) into the waiting hands of Harman, and Kent running out Radley (5) with a direct hit. In the field the combination of youth and experience kept the runs to a minimum with the summer holidays dictating some new faces dotted around the outfield. With the ever agile Webb Senior fielding at first slip, the older (and balder) Tokley variant kept patrol at square leg, with the youth of Duggan and Elles showing the oldies how it’s done with some Jonty-esque fielding performances.

With Galleywood starting to build their innings divine intervention wasn't exactly needed quite yet but nonetheless our team mentor AB was keen to help, and whilst listening to the ringing of church bills down the road, Storm Barker swept in ripping a gazebo out of the ground into the adjoining car park. As spectators mopped up their spilt cocktails and checked their motor insurance policies, a temporary break in play enabled both teams to take a breather and assess the match position. With the Health & Safety inspectors interviewing witnesses the on-field action continued with the home team appearing to benefit most from the break. The bowling stranglehold continued with Eaglesham Jr (7-1-17-1) and Duggan (7-0-35-0) keeping the pressure on with impressive spells.

The star of the show was still to come though with Elles (5-0-21-3) bowling a peerless five over spell of left arm spin up the hill, taking three wickets in the process and ripping the heart out of the Galleywood middle order. More evidence of the impressive Great Waltham Colts production line! With Williams manfully batting through for a resilient 43 not out, and Wicks (20) adding some late order runs, Duggan and Tokley Jr bowled bravely at the death to limit the final Galleywood total to 157, a challenging but realistic target. The Waltham boys could be happy with their efforts in the field, with three Under 15 players (Tokley Jr, Duggan and Elles) all adding significant contributions with the ball.

With appetites satisfied Reed and Eaglesham Sr set out in pursuit of victory with both men adopting a watchful start with Singleton and Steventon bowling with pace and guile to limit scoring opportunities. The lack of a breakthrough within the first ten overs proved decisive though with frustration creeping in as the innings progressed, and Galleywood’s change bowlers offering up a fair amount of ‘buffet bowling’ with Eaglesham Senior in particular freeing his arms and taking advantage. Having made an impressive half-century and dispatched several balls into neighbouring property, Eaglesham was dismissed for 59 and a well-earned rest (not that the skipper thought he deserved it quite yet, with our sadistic skipper calling him back on the field for umpiring duties two overs later!)

The damage had been done though and Galleywood knew it. With the unheralded Gavlar carrying his bat in true Atherton style for an impressive 36 not out, D’eath (12) and Eaglesham Jr (5 not out) played a couple of cameo’s at the end as the dapperly-attired Mr Barker made a brief appearance to see the boys cross the winning line. Target met in the 34th over, a great effort from the boys, with youth and experience combining with both bat and ball. Beaulieu Park 2nd’s away next week – we go again!
