Little Baddow v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 04 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 4 runs

Match report The 2019 1st XI season is underway - what COULD have been, wasn’t.

We were welcomed to the home of newly promoted Little Baddow. The green pitch and forecast of rain made the skippers decision to bowl relatively straightforward.
Difficult conditions to bowl admittedly. A wet ball, arctic wind, small boundaries and stop/start innings could be given as the excuse for a well below performance in the field. The truth was that Baddow’s top order applied themselves well, punished the many loose balls and our strong, deep and experienced bowling attack disappointed. Tucker's return (2 wickets), Taylor's timely contribution (2 wickets), Chappy Snrs control and Bloomers leg-side catch aside, very little else to be happy with. The performance of Tucker's new spikes were comical. Refund please.

So the half time target was a tough 252 off 36 overs.

Missing Captain Harris and Oli Fitzwater, responsibility rested on the shoulders of the Blooms Snr and Jnr and Clouty. Excellent batting from all three, coupled with Matty Reed’s positive opening innings (38) and the mid-order who sacrificed their wickets for the cause, restored some pride.
Matty, Bloom Snr and Clouty batted beautifully in unison with Dan, who held his bat and finished unbeaten on 140. What a captain’s knock!
I’ll leave the statisticians to update this report with the further analysis his incredible innings deserved. It was a privilege to watch it, especially for Gordon and Shirley Bloom, our biggest supporters, who were understandably proud to see father and son doing so well. We all wish Gordon fast recovery from ill health.

Imagine what score this team will get the day Dan, Dave and Sam all hit their straps simultaneously. What a shame therefore we were chasing an above par score and fell so agonisingly close.
We finished 247-4 - what SHOULD have been, wasn’t. Better preparation, better application, and better concentration is needed. The first half was all a bit village really.

A strong and wounded GWCC will look to welcome Writtle next week with a full game performance worthy of the players and our many loyal supporters' expectations.
