Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Tillingham on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 15 runs

Match report Top of the table Tillingham visited fortress Waltham hoping to propel themselves to favourites in the title race. Perhaps the strongest first XI of the season stood in their way. Tillingham were 2 men down early on as car issues hampered their numbers. For the 3rd week in a row we were able to bat first and despite the overnight rain the pitch was relatively dry as the emergency cover did its job.

Reedy was the first man to fall early on as he guided the opening bowler straight into the welcoming hands of the keeper. Dan and I began our rebuilding of the innings, aware that we had our longest batting line-up of the year behind us. It came very much of a surprise when Dan was suddenly bowled around his leg by what can only be described as a ball that hooped. I departed soon after as Allen enticed an airy drive and we were 3 down within 15 overs. Dave was the next to fall and the lower half of the long batting order was in desperate need of firing if we were to make a competitive total.

Luckily we did have our best batting line up of the year and luckily we had Wickesy and Gary in fine form. They absorbed any pressure Tillingham threw at them, rotated strike and then counter punched as they got us to an imposing total. It was seriously impressive batting and illustrated our depth and potency in the battting department, especially at home. The partnership consisted of 130 runs and contained 16 boundaries. It meant we were able to set Tillingham 238 runs to win.

In reply Josh had Parlour caughjt in the 1st over and we thought we were on our way to an emphatic victory. Cummins and Mee had other ideas. They built a solid partnership, Dave rotating the strike and striking the occasional glorious cover drive, Mee taking a more pragmatic approach, swiping anything full down the ground. One the one day we went in with only 4 front-line bowlers, Rhys just had to go down injured with a sore knee. It was such a shame, Rhys was bowling with supreme accuracy and control.

One man’s injury is another man’s opportunity and both ‘part - time’ bowlers Wickesy and Clouty stood up to take their opportunity. Dave bowled 10 overs straight for 53 runs and deserved a wicket. On the other hand, newish import Graham announced himself to the club as he took 6 wickets and routed the top order of Tillingham. First he had Mee stumped off a smart piece of work by Gary. Shafi looked like he had the potential to take the game away from us before Wickesy once again served up his magic, Gary once again snaffling a tough chance behind the stumps. Graham elicited some extra bounce from the surface to get Cummins to spoon a chance to a hobbled Rhys at backward point. Wickesy had 3 and Tillingham were panicking. Where we had strength in depth in our batting, Tillingham did not.

Wickes took 5 of the top 6 and 6 of the top 7 as we ran through the lower order in a complete reversal from our own innings. The last 10 overs almost completely belonged to us as were able to keep Tillingham 15 short of our total and pull out our 3rd win on the trot. It was a superb fight back in the last 10 overs of their innings against a team high on confidence and I am hopeful we can continue this forward for the rest of the season and onto next.

A special thanks to Wickesy for announcing himself with such aplomb. His first half century and first fifer in the same game netted him man of the match.
