Rayne 1st v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 47 runs

Match report Leading from the front, a marvellous all-round performance from the captain Robbo - 103 opening the batting; 3-48 with the ball and a catch, enabled us to win by a comfortable margin of 47 runs.

Thank goodness we lost the toss and were inserted , think Robbo would have fielding:( Unlike last week where we held the momentum for 35 minutes, yesterday we were always 'ahead' even when Barton was batting beautifully for the visitors. On a beautiful warm sunny day, Robbo was soon into his stride striking the Barton back over his head in his first over. Fielding (0-22 off 10 overs) opening the bowling at the other end, left arm 'dibblie-dobblies', good change of pace and swinging the occasional ball, was a different proposition. Robbo's desire to go aerial was infectious and I too found myself lifting the ball off the carpet, I must admit to getting a tingling feeling in my spine, may have to occasionally change my game in future weeks...or not. In four games this was our fourth different opening partnership, too early to judge if this is the perfect partnership, I had resided myself to middle order specialist this season, however needs must. It was certainly our most productive, we had added 149 off 29 overs when I thought I'd hit a perfectly timed boundary drive to long on, much to my surprise, the home team who had spilled a few easier chances earlier, clung on. Robbo soon brought up the 2nds first hundred this season (cut and paste this link to watch the moment: https://youtu.be/FmUD-xB_S-0 ). Younger legs propelled us to 274, with Harrison making a vital 44 ably supported by Lewis 23 and Cameron 14.

Surely we can defend 274, the opposition had a couple of very good batsmen in their line up. We have seen what can happen if you allow good players time in the middle. Banks was one of those batters and Rhys' first delivery was a beauty finding the edge, giving Ryan a tough chance low to his right in front of first slip, a valiant attempt, however the ball spilled out. Thankfully, Cameron enticed Banks to mistimed a pull to Jake at mid-off. Like last week, the opposition had lost three quick wickets, Lewis holding on to a very sharp chance and second slip, Nindi described it as "proper cricket". 34-3 we were firmly in control, however Barton looked like he has played a higher standard, batting with elegance and fine timing, together with Alen they rebuilt the innings, adding 110. We were starting to lose our intensity in the field and with wickets in hand, the home team were in a decent position to make a final push in the last 15 overs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man of the day - Robbo gave us the vita breakthrough, finding the edge of Alen, the ball melting in my palms in gully. A couple of lusty blows from Fielding threatened, however having been dropped the previous ball, Robbo called and held a skier off his own bowling. The key wicket was Barton, having played beautifully, hit a full toss to Rhys (never in doubt) at long on. With only ten men batting, Cameron gave us max bowling points, with Nindi holding a high catch at mid-wicket...second attempt.

What a lovely feeling, winning. Let's make this a habit. Cameron finishing with another 3 wickets, Jake bowled better than his figures suggest, Harry opened his wicket account this season. The ground fielding was very good, the occasional lapse. For those us who are north of 50, we are truly grateful to all the younger players, you make a huge difference. Rayne are a side we should beat, however the majority of the players could bat. They are hampered by not having young legs in the field and dropped too many catches.

A special mention to Sam Harman, who was a late draft and our super-sub Graham Duncan (Harry's dad), for fielding for 18 overs - thank you both.

Next week, we host St Andrews, the only unbeaten side in the division. Looking at their results, bowling is their strength, if we can get 220...the record will end.

Congratulations to the Ladies and 3rds, Joel Barker 50 and 6 wickets including a hat-trick. Might see you next week mate. Shame Sam's men could scrap the additional 6 runs for a clean sweep of wins - no doubt they will soon be back to winning ways. Remember Sam form is temporary, ask Joss and Virat.

Have a great week. Oh how I love this game we play.

I can't say, 'It doesn't matter if you win or lose.' It's not true. You go in to win. Katarina Witt
