Purleigh 1st v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Strongylodon macrobotrys, otherwise known as Jade Vine is one of the most beautiful flowers when fully blossmed. It is a sight of beauty and warms the heart. Yesterday with 87 still required and in danger of the host notching their first win of the season, our own flowers (Lewis and Harrison) blossomed is the Essex sunshine in an unbeaten partnership to secure a comfortable 6 wicket win.
Robbo winning a vital toss invited Purleigh to bat in fluctuating conditions, light drizzle, strong winds and warm sunshine. Rhys and Cameron were both aggrieved with a lapses in the field and both openers were dropped within the first 5 overs, in addition to Taylor miscuing a skier to point where Nindi would have taken a comfortable catch had the gust not blown the ball to backward point/fly slip! Credit to both Rhys and Cameron who didn't sulk like the opposition opening bowler.
In recent weeks Harry Duncan has started to find rhyme and form and he promptly removed the Purleigh captain first ball with late in-drift that smacked leg stump. Four balls later he lured Taylor to heave to point where the out stretched hands of Nindi took a good catch. 52-2 off 15 overs. Our catching was poor and overall we dropped 5 catches and missed a simple run out. The hosts never looked in control however ended up with a competitive total 190-6, in hindsight that was 40 more than what they should have got. Some excellent bowling figures (see below) with Harry the pick with 2-28 off 10 overs.
So 191 to win with the sun shining and I strode out with another new opening partner (squad rotation) Luke Tanner. I like batting with Luke, his 'Jason Roy' approach, see ball hit ball, got us off to a flying start and resulted in numerous teapot impressions from the opening bowler John...not quite sure why. We had raced to 32 when Luke was plumb in front to Bowles. The 'Romford Express' annouced his arrival by depositing his 4th ball back over Bowles' head one bounce four. There are days when the ball just finds the middle of the bat, nothing in the wicket and boundaries flow...that's how well Nindi was batting. I was enjoying the sun and admiring from the other end when at 76-1, I some how managed to hit a rank long-hop straight to deep mid-wicket. Robbo soon followed and when Nindi dragged on at 105 for 4, there was some nerves on our bench, surely we cannot lose to the bottom club on a flat track with against ordinary bowling? Ah the Strongylodon macrobotrys, they bring such warmth and admiration, Lewis (51*) and Harrison (42*), batting with ease and no less grace, running enthusiastically, flowing with cuts, pulls and drives. We sauntered home with numerous overs to spare and secured our third successive victory.
As Nipper said last week, no pint in beating the top side if we then lose to the bottom club. Next week, we are back home to Stock, on paper a side we should beat. Well done to all, however we MUST not drop that many catches against better opposition.
The summer is here, I'm off to watch my beloved 'Indians' now. Another great weekend, 4 wins so far. Special mention to Jake for a massive performance for the threes and and my mate Bloomer senior for 5 over on the back nine on Friday and followed up with a crucial 50 and excellent display behind the stumps #loveavet
Have a marvellous week all.
