Tillingham v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Fine dining, champagne, special reserve wine, bramble whiskey, 5 hours sleep followed by a full English at Hintlesham Hall, is how our Kiwi overseas player prepared for yesterday's game. The captain knowing the value of his opening partner drove him from Ipswich to get mentally prepared. He didn't disappoint and was the only player to be on the field for all 74.1 overs of the game, carrying his bat for an imperious 109 not out (20 fours and 3 sixes) to guide us to a comfortable victory by 7 wickets.

It was not just the Duggan show and huge credit to many of our youngsters who bowled and fielded with enthusiasm and energy. Firstly, Issac asked to bowl 8 overs straight returned outstanding figures 3 for 19 with four maidens. Ronan bowling with hostility is a real find for the club and I hope he is available for the remaining games, finished with 2 for 29 off 8 overs and halted any late acceleration. Alfie took the crucial wicket of Pankhurst (65) when the opposition were 154-3 with 10 overs remaining and two set batsmen looking to push the score in excess of 230.

The home team having won the toss were 51-0 when Issac enticed the home captain G Hylton to drive to Lewis who took the first of two excellent catches, this one diving forward and the second, plucked nonchalantly two-handed to his right off a full blooded drive off a full toss. On a wicket with uneven bounce, our vocal keeper Kieran kept very well and 10 byes do not reflect some fine glove work. Our club is short of young keepers and we need to keep encouraging and giving them opportunities in senior cricket. With an very good young attack, I was able to limit Duggers to bowling 4 overs and he duly obliged with 2 for 18 and a catch.

207 to win at tea was a score I felt below par and as long as we didn't lose early wickets, the points should be ours. We got off to an excellent start with plenty of full deliveries to feast on. Bizarrely all the uneven bounce in the Tillingham innings seemed to have disappeared. This is credit to our seamers who all bowled with more purpose and not as full. My opening partner in conversation between overs indicated the odds at Paddy Power on Tillingham bowlers getting a wicket were long and only batsmen error would give the the opposition a breakthrough...I wonder what the odds on a run-out were? We'd added 91 off 16 overs, in the last 3 months Mrs Patel has consigned me to a keto diet which resulted in losing two stones, looks like I need to lose a few more pounds as I short by 2 feet with a direct hit from the keeper. 91-0 became 122-3 with neither Lewis or Kieran able to keep Duggers company.
Thankfully, Jamie (29*) who's batting has climbed another level this season batted beautifully with Duggs to see us home without any further alarms.

Finally, credit to all those who worked tirelessly to get three teams on the park this weekend. We are now in the holiday season and even countries on the quarantine list is not halting travel plans for many of us. If you are not going away, please do make yourself available, there are only three league games left and we'll all miss playing when autumn arrives.

Have a great week, I'm off to have share a bottle of 'Cloudy bay' with the Kiwi:)
