Match report The opening game of the 2021 cricket season saw the Great Waltham Great Caps travel to South Loughton 2nd XI in Division 9 of the Mid Essex Cricket League. There was the element of the unknown as little cricket had been played last year and South Loughton were new to the Mid Essex League. The anticipation was great.

South Loughton made a very impress 301 for 1 from their 40 overs. Despite a few dropped catches both B Soomro and V Kelmar were in total control. After 20 overs the home side were 99 without loss. In the second part of their innings the run rate was accelerated and few if any chances were given. Kelmar was run out for 120 and Soomro carried his bat on 143. The pick of the very young Great Waltham attack was Grant Payne with 9 overs 2 maidens for 47 runs. As the season progresses the young bowling attack will get better and they hopefully will not bowl to such a quality opening batting partnership!

Great Watham showed great spirit chasing over 300 for the first time ever! They made 212 for 4 from their 40 overs gaining full batting points. Pick of the batsman were P Whettel making 76 not out and J De'ath scoring 60 runs. Best bowling for South Loughton - M Rehman with 8 overs 2 maidens 21 runs 2 wickets. A worthy win for South Loughton by 89 runs.

Let's take the positives from the game. Some good bowling from Grant and James. All the youngsters turned their arm over for the first time in a long time. Maximum batting points and it was great to be back out there. We look forward to hosting South Loughton 2nd XI in early July.
