Rayleigh 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets.

Match report Great Waltham cruised to a comfortable 7 wicket win at Rawreth Lane thanks to an impressive all-round team performance. Once again, Reedy (3-29) did the early damage, removing the in-form Lynch (0), Nolde (8) and captain Walker (1) to leave Rayleigh in disarray at 34-3 and wobbling again at 57-5. The elegant Ellis (69) stood firm throughout and found useful support from K Patel (18) and Godfrey (27) but the spin of H (3-26) and tight lines from JT (9-4-21-1) kept the scoring in check and it was only Extras (34) and a lightning quick outfield that got Rayleigh to a seemingly above-par score of 170. On a hot day, the ground fielding was sharp, the field placements (generally) on point and the vast majority of catches were taken... Wazza, Arthur, Webby and Span all clinging on to tough chances. Kieran's probably the best grab of the bunch. Despite missing Jake and Cam, we bowled really well as a unit and never let up.

Span departed to the 1st delivery of the reply to a typical peach of a delivery from Trevor Nunn but H (29) and Jamie (31) put together a smart 53-run partnership for the 2nd wicket albeit riding their luck in the process as a number of tough chances were shelled... Jamie with some majestic shots through the mid-wicket area. Just as the game appeared to be creeping away from Rayleigh, both batters fell in quick succession to sharp catches by M Patel who provided a largely needless send-off following his caught and bowled. Whilst Blooma (58*) and Webby (39*) both made slightly scratchy/edgy starts they soon found their respective strides in quite some style and put the Rayleigh change bowlers to the sword with an unbroken partnership of 83 for the 4th wicket in double-quick time, Blooma peppering the fence in a boundary-laden knock to seal 23 precious points and keep the changing room buzzing.

Whilst the top 3 in the Division are some distance clear now, some comprehensive results this weekend have brought several teams within a win of each other and a little bit of daylight is starting to emerge between us and the bottom 2. A couple more wins and we can start looking up, not down.

Let's take the momentum into next weekend...
