Match report Although early in the season Great Waltham travelled to Raphael's Park to play Hornchurch Athletic in a top of the table clash - first versus second. With the rain the previous day, the pitch was getting a late cut as the visitors won the toss and elected to put Hornchurch into bat.

A very young Waltham side started tightly. Hornchurch 22 for 0 after 9 overs. Opener Pontin looked in fine form and the challenge was surely to prevent the South African from scoring his third successive hundred.

The first wicket came in the 16th over with a fine run out from Brittain but this just seemed to accelerate the run rate. Pontin was trading in boundaries but missed the opportunity to make it three 100's in three consecutive innings. Out for 89 - caught Hercock bowled Webb. 163 for 2 from 30 overs. The final 10 overs went for 70 runs as Hornchurch made 232 for 3 from their 40 overs. Nine bowlers were used and the pick of them were Nuttall - 7 overs for 22, Webb - 4 overs 1 for 24 and Brittain 3 overs 1 for 13.

After a fine tea, Waltham needed to be at their best to get anywhere close to the total of 232. With Reed and Brittain in the middle for 6 overs the outcome looked bright. Brittain however was given out leg before and youngster McMillian came to the crease. He was still there 34 overs later as the 15 year old batted straight and sensibly scoring 70 runs. Kent (35) and Webb (21) assisted but the visitors fell 43 runs short. Pick of the Hornchurch bowling was Shazad 8 overs, 1 maiden, 3 for 41.

Great Waltham look forward to hosting Hornchurch in July providing 4 cakes not 3!
