Great Totham 2nd v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 33 runs
Match report
On a warm muggy day at Great Totham, our winning streak came to an end, falling short by 33 runs. It was a game we were never ahead in, possibly on par at the drinks interval in our innings when Micky and Nindi, looked to be building a decisive partnership. Sadly both were dismissed in consecutive balls to poor deliveries (full toss and long-hop).
Those who have played at this small ground, know that all teams chase if they win the toss. Robbo wisely did the same, however the home side raced away. This is the part of the game this season we have been much improved and disciplined. The openers Hewer and Chadwick had raced to 83 off 12 overs when Jamie bowled Hewer. Chadwick (John) was bowled and Jake and Robbo soon removed Josh Chadwick. Unfortunately, Totham's best player, Foxall was stumped by a considerable margin, given not out, it was a crucial moment in the game with the batsmen going on to make 44.
Credit to Robbo, who's bowling in recent weeks has been instrumental in our league position, yet again bowled a tight line and all batters found him hard to get away, finishing with 4-35.
Another area were we have been much improved has been our ground fielding, however yesterday we were poor, in addition to the innings top score being extras, 63, compared to our season average of 18. In the end, we sat at tea, needing 249 for seven straight wins.
On this ground, with our batting we would back ourselves, Micky who has not had the best of luck recently had clearly confessed his sins at church last Sunday and the cricketing gods forgave him. Dropped first and fifth balls of the first over, he was batting beautifully. Yours truly failed to trouble the scorers, however I will be aggrieved if I get another delivery of that quality this season. Nindi too was batting fluently and we had reached 103 off 23 overs. With wickets in hand and small boundaries, the game was finely poised. 15 year old Quarermain who had bowled well, flung a full toss outside leg stump to Nindi who 'helped' the ball to deep fine leg where John Chadwick (senior) jogging around, stuck out his left hand to find the ball nestled, much to his surprise and just about all his team-mates. The next next ball Micky paddled to square leg. Harrison departed in the same over and the game was firmly in Totham's hand 111-4 off 26 overs. We needed one of Robbo or Luke to get a 50-60, that scenario did not manifest. We fell short by 33 runs, however with 8 bonus points we have our noses ahead of Totham by one point and remain second in the table.
A special mention to Josh Fall, who was drafted in last minute and had to keep wicket. It was a tough challenge and a day when we should have bowled better. I hope he doesn't let this experience deter his desire to play senior cricket. It was possibly unfair of us to thrust him is that role.
Next week we are at home to Great Baddow and hope to have a couple of regulars back in the side. Let's not dwell too much on yesterday's event, I'm confident to getting that winning habit back.
