Woodham Mortimer v Great Waltham Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 07 Jul 2019 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won By 31 Runs
Match report
With a late team change due to a dodgy gastronomic encounter (the club wishes H speedy recovery), the Sunday XI travelled to Woodham Mortimer.
We selected to bat first on a pitch that had potential to deteriorate as the game progressed. Jamie and Matty opened the innings in steady fashion until the latter was smartly caught in the covers by Uzair attempting to push along the scoring rate.
Ollie joined Jamie at the crease and the scoring rate steadily increased. Two quick wickets, including Ollie being dismissed from a sharply turning ball from Shani through the gate, brought De'ath and Fitz to the crease. Both batted sensibly but with intent and with a score of 200+ potentially on it was a surprise to see De'ath mistiming a full toss to mid off for 24. With Fitz (31) following soon after, caught at long on by Uzair, we needed to reset expectations.
Joel and Jake dismissals followed promptly with Jake being caught casually, a stretching one handed pluck, at cover. Joe hit a quick 18 and it was left to the the tail to try and eek out a few extra runs, with Alfie making a fine 7 including a slog swept four.
The score of 177 looked at least 20 runs light and we needed a decent performance in the field to remain in the game.
Ollie and JT hit their length immediately and the scoring was restricted through a combination of some spritely fielding and playing and missing.
JT got his reward by yorking Goode for 10 bringing Shani to the crease.
A confident appeal against the new batsman for a caught behind was turned down which followed by Shani taking advantage of his good fortune by tracking JT and immediately dispatching him over cow for a maximum.
Joe and Fitz came on after the first 10 and kept it tight. However, Shani used his feet to loft Fitz over mid on, landing inbetween traffic, for a huge six. Fitz bowled the opener Payne bringing Uzair to the crease.
With 20 overs gone the game was favouring the home side with the scoring rate starting to accelerate. Joel was brought on to take advantage of the turning track and got his reward as Shani was smartly caught by Ollie at cow a foot above the turf. The same combo nearly took the wicket of Uzair but the tumbling Ollie was unable keep his one handed grab inside the rope.
Uzair was continuing to hit with power and it was key to dismiss him before he retired. Jake and Alfie bowled well without much luck and the skipper decided to turn to JT. This resulted in one of the biggest sixes seen as the ball disappeared into neighbouring forest. Uzair on 49, attempting to repeat the same feat, sliced a slower ball high in the air which was calmly pouched by Joel just in front of the sightscreen.
The run rate started to climb and with Joe and Jamie bowling fast and straight the wickets started to fall. Fitz took the final wicket with the first ball of his spell to claim a tightly contested match.
Special credit to Alfie who stood in at the last minute, bowled well, scored vital runs and was smart in the field.
