Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Writtle 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2014 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
With seven needed off the last two balls, Jason Todd, ignited wild celebrations by hooking the penultimate for six and then scrabbling a single with Neil to secure a thrilling first win of the campaign. This was even more remarkable considering the previous four balls had yield just a single.
Having won the toss for the third successive game and the weather forecast for showers, very few of us had anticipated a completed game, albeit a shorten one to 35 overs.
Once again we had made inroads in the top order with Dave (2-28) and Ross reducing the opposition to 35-3 off 11 overs. Sadly we lost Lewis to a back muscle injury after just 5 deliveries. This is very early season and just his second match with the ball, however Ross is developing into a fine bowler, no doubt an extended spell in the side will not only build confidence, more importantly continue to bring further wickets. The age ruling on 6 overs is inconveniencing us, once more he was into a fine groove when we had to replace him. He came back to finish with 3-43 off 10 overs. The Writtle middle to lower railed and the rain came with the score at 175-7 off 35 overs. With overs being deduced every 6 minutes, I was not keen to take tea...the opposition captain offering us a 35 overs to chase 176, by the time we walked out to bat, the ground was bathed in sunshine and few dark clouds looming. We progressed quietly for us to 31, when Dave was bowled. Our scoring rate was 3 an over when Nindi edged to slip 46-2. The crucial partnership between Blooma and yours truly was slowing titling the match our way, we still needed one big over and it arrived in the 23rd over, 16 runs resulted. Blooma reminded me that we'll never have a better opportunity to get our first win as long as one of us stayed to the end. Two more towering sixes from Blooma and the match was ours for the taking. Then in the 32nd over Blooma's fine knock ended when caught on the long on boundary. Two overs later I came back for a suicidal second in the hope of a poor throw and fumble, neither manifested and walked off wondering weather I had thrown a victory away. Jason provided the drama and we had secured a much needed win.
Cricket is a funny game - at 1030am I was attempting to negotiate an abandon game, especially with the forecast. At 1130am, the Writtle captain persuaded me that as long as there were no more showers, we could at least start, knowing that a game is unlikely to be concluded. At 130pm we reluctantly took the field with the ground still damp, however no rain. At Tea a number of us were thinking the current shower would ultimately bring the game to a permanent halt. The Writtle captain was generous in his offer, somehow I'm not sure too many captains in this league will be open to such offers or be as keen to play as Harsha (Writtle). It was his spirit that allowed us to have a memorable afternoon.
Next week we travel to neighbours Little Waltham who are reputed to have a strong side. Let's enjoy this week and know that practice makes us better players, do make an effort to attend nets on Thursday.
