Fyfield v Great Waltham Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 04 May 2014 at 2 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won 2 Runs

Match report On a sunny afternoon a Great Waltham Sunday XI consisting of 4 U13’s, 1 U15, 3 U17’s and 3 over 18’s took on a mighty Fyfield XI skippered by master tactician, Mary Shaw. Matty Reed, Great Waltham’s stand in Captain, started in fine form by losing the toss and was put in to bat on a slow green wicket. This was soon compounded by a spree of 3 wickets without a run being scored with Tommy, Matty and Ryan all caught playing early off the front foot.
A mini recovery developed between Tucker and Josh De’ath who, with the aid of his new ‘speedy super shoes’, started to impress the gallery with his mastery of the quick single. Following a number of assured shots through the covers the partnership was broken with Josh being castled while attempting an extravagant drive.
Lewis Chapman was next in and the pair continued the good work until Chappy Jnr mistimed on-drive was well caught at deep mid-on. This signalled the arrival of Chappy snr to partner Tucker and the pair assuredly accumulated runs as the score started to approach respectability (over 36 runs).
Confidence was starting to filter through to the team as and the opening bowling attack made way for the whirling leg-spin from the opposition’s captain. With runs flowing it was a shock to the audience as well as the batsman when Tucker failed to connect with a sweep and was bowled round his legs for an elegant 29.
Jamie Carroll then strode to the wicket to begin what was to prove the decisive partnership in the innings with Chappy snr unleashing a powerful display of hitting ably supported by his younger batting partner whose shot selection was exemplary throughout.
Like son like father, and with Chappy snr holing out in the deep for a brutal 81 it was left to young Cam Brown to play a cameo to haul Waltham to a respectable score of 187 with Jamie finishing on 41no. A fantastic recovery considering the dodgy start and it is worth recognising the efforts of Josh Harman who boosted the opposition’s numbers and without his dynamic fielding would have ensured Waltham a score nearer 200.
After a fine tea Fyfield made their intentions clear by sending in their power players to the top of the order leaving it to Waltham to set the tone for the innings and control the run chase from the outset.
Opening the bowling with Tucker was Tom Gore and both found their line and length to apply early pressure to the openers and with a little more luck could have got a breakthrough as both batsman played and missed. Right from the first over the ground fielding was exceptional in the face of some ferocious shots with Cam diving, Josh prowling with the aid of his super-fast footwear and Matty using any bony part of his body to ensure the ball should not pass.
Chappy junior and De’ath then entered the fray keeping the pressure on but the score continued to creep up with the wickets in hand proving a concern. Chappy snr and Matty then joined the attack to apply the squeeze as the run rate required approached 6 an over. More exceptional fielding from Lewis, Tom, Tommy, Jamie and Ryan (with admirable support from replacement keeper De’ath) ensured the pressure brought about a wicket.
The game was fast approaching its final phase with Tommy and Cam given the responsibility to take the game away from the hosts. Nerves started to kick in exemplified by a spectacular collision between the skipper and a supersonic Ryan on the boundary. It was left to Chappy snr to bowl the final over with 9 required. With a four conceded off the first ball the run up lengthened with each ball bowled. With 3 required off the final ball the leg stump cartwheeled for a satisfying victory where everyone played a critical part with bat, ball or in the field.
Congratulations to all involved in the victory which helped highlight how superb ground fielding can win a match. Apologies to the 2 batsmen and 2 bowlers who did not get a chance to shine in their disciplines, there should be plenty of opportunities in the near future. And a final word to the oppositions young opener Danny Gould who scored his maiden 50 and nearly won the game for the hosts.
