Springfield 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 08 Aug 2015 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report With the Ashes regained at 1139am, there was a happy jovial atmosphere at Coronation Park, which produced an tense and exciting encounter with the home side getting home by two wickets and just 4 balls to spare. If we spend our Saturday afternoons playing games like these, we shouldn’t complain…occasionally it would good to have fortunes reversed.
On a beautiful sunny, warm day, I had no hesitation in batting, shame our winning record isn’t comparable to me winning tosses (6 out of 6). Unable to get the ball off the square, I eventually ‘nicked’ one to the keeper. Sam joined Bloomer and looked to have wrested the initiative back in our favour when just before drinks, Bloomer batting well (5 four) edged one to slip for 21. 52-2 soon became 69-3 When Sam (25) playing fluently, gloved a bouncer from Khan to the keeper attempting to pull.
One of my ‘pleads’ this season is for the young players to step up, take responsibility, especially when faced with adversity. This has been a challenging season, obvious statement in light of our results, however a beautiful silver lining appeared yesterday afternoon when Ollie joined Dan in a partnership of 123 at just under a run a ball. Dan played a mature innings full lovely elegant drives, however he also muscled three sixes over mid-wicket, raising eye-brows and joy amongst our bench. Ollie has come of age as a batsmen this season, yes the figures could be better, however yesterday, he didn’t panic and continue to drive the ball with lovely timing (eleven fours). We looked set for a score in excess of 240, when Dan top-edged Hartley to short fine leg for well-crafted 63. Ollie attempting to propel us to an above par score was soon bowled for 58 and from 192-3 we finished on 225-9 at tea.
I had a feeling the score would be sufficient as Springfield are a young side and chasing can add additional pressure, especially if we could get a couple of early wickets. Sadly, we couldn’t apply any pressure on the openers; Prudence in particular favouring the pull to mid-wicket was obliged too often.
With a change of bowling, JT provided the breakthrough having Powell LBW for 18. The very next ball the Springfield captain was what appeared to be smartly stumped by Bloomer (legside), however the umpire reprieved Frost, how crucial was that? The pair had taken Springfield to 107-1 when Sammy Harman enticed Prudence to drive firmly to mid-on where Tucker took a smart low catch. Sammy and JT then took control and I was convinced the game was ours at 154-5. If we could dispose of Frost, the pressure would surely be too much for the younger incoming batsmen. The Springfield captain however played a lovely composed innings and was shepherding he’s team to victory when 17 short of the target, he played an uncharacteristic slog and walked when Bloomer stumped of Ollie. With many watching, tense and cheering every home run, young Pathan hit a couple of crucial boundaries, one straight drive with like an experienced ‘Old-Pro’ in the penultimate over seemed to have relived the pressure, however Ollie then added further drama by bowling him the next ball. With two to win, Josh back for the final over, found a flaying edge of Hartley’s bat which flew just past Bloomers gloves and the home side had kept their promotion hopes alive.

With three games and Rayleigh losing yesterday, there is still a dim light at the end of the tunnel. We must win all three to avoid relegation. Beat the current first and second side in the division and then face Rayleigh at home for the decider (assuming Rayleigh lose their next two)…what’s that saying about Fat lady and singing?

To avoid sounding like a broken record, our effort in the second half of the season has been heartening and I’d like to thank all the players. Our fortunes will change and we will be victors in a tight game, any game for that matter.
I’m handing over the reins for the next two games as Sri Lanka awaits us, where I’ve successfully negotiated a day to watch and get inspired by Virat Kholi and Co. I will be texting in anticipation of dreams still alive.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, The Ashes have been regained before the Premiership season started…awesome.
