Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Terling 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets.
Match report
A promising position was once again left unexploited as we were comprehensively beaten by a well deserving Terling side. The promising part is we are getting ourselves in positions to win games, unfortunately we currently seem to have an inability to build upon these positions. Hopefully this is little more than a blip in an otherwise successful season.
A change of captaincy instantly brought about a change in luck regarding the toss as we won it for the first time this season (?) and chose to bat on a day which could have easily been a bowling day. A change of openers was required with the evergreen Nindi partnering Dan ‘I haven’t actually been out properly this season’ Bloom. Dan soon sent back LBW with one that everyone felt kept a little low allowing him to keep the aforementioned nickname.
The next 35 overs were in stark contrast to the indifferent batting we had seen last week. Grit and determination were required against the two Terling opening bowlers who are probably the best pair we have had to face for a considerable amount of time. 30 off of 14 overs reflected, perhaps on a few missed scoring opportunities but mainly on the relentless accuracy and skill of Woolfenden and Wager. The change bowlers bought something of a release for Nindi and I, as we started to creep the run rate up and after 30 overs we had accelerated to 115.
As we all know scoring at 8 an over in the last 15 is more than possible playing at home, which would have given us 230ish. As it turned out we only managed 202, despite some lusty blows from a bullish Swanny, as Nindi first departed for a well compiled 60 (a mostly one legged 60 as a strained hamstring limited his movement) and then I played an unnecessary rash shot straight after getting my 100. Chances of getting 230 after that were slimmer as we rather limped to 202.
203 felt slightly short but still somewhat defendable on a grassy pitch if our new ball bowlers could nab a few early wickets. Unfortunately the opening bowling was somewhat wayward as the left hand – right hand combination seemed to distract our required lines and lengths. Of course when a captain requires wickets the kiwi express has a rather handy knack of picking them up as he sent the ex minor county player Nahorniak packing.
I got the impression that the Terling batting may be like their bowling, lacking in significant depth. After 20 overs or so they were well past 100 which had more to do our bowling than their batting. PA picked up the captain Taylor with a nip backer. Jagota batted well for his 57 before picking out ‘in – out – in – out’ Tucker at deep cow, although I can hardly say we bowled particularly well at him, bowling too short for his preference of pull and cut shots. Terling’s ‘have a go’ attitude was paying off as although Swanny was bowling tightly from one end the run rate still continued to fall.
Swanny’s figures were slightly ruined by two sixes off his last over but he continues to provide an extremely useful spin option, a rarity in this league. We bowled fairly decently in the last 10 overs, picking up wickets at regular intervals as Josh Fitz bowled some toe smashing yorkers but the damage had already been done in the first 20 overs. In the end a disappointing defeat.
I would very much like to thank Janet for doing the teas and John for marking the pitch in the morning. This club would struggle without their continued efforts.
On to next week and another week to right the wrongs of the previous week and to take hold of the opportunities that come our way.
