Scorecard

Galleywood v Great Waltham Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 24 Apr 2016 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The match started with the Waltham captain winning the toss and electing to field on a breezy and overcast afternoon in conditions that were approaching sub-zero temperatures. The opposition had a strong team out with a good mixture of youth and experience and with a short boundary ensuring that a disciplined approach to bowling was going to be key in keeping the game competitive.

Galleywood’s scorecard was dominated by Danny McIntyre who produced an excellent innings of 115. However, Waltham’s bowlers showed enough control to keep the scoring in check with Alfie, Harrison, Cam, Joel and Jake making season debuts and contributing 17 overs, conceding just 90 runs for 1 wicket. This was even more impressive considering the short boundary. They were never phased getting hit for a few boundaries, they kept at it and should have had more wickets on another day. Sam “Biggles” Harris and Tucks both had excellent spells and prised out 2 wickets a piece leaving Josh and Matty to bowl with flight and guile for the remaining overs. Josh nearly reaching terminal velocity.. Once called upon Daniel Bloom speared for a few in, but couldn’t be blamed for the towering sixes, bowling to the short boundary, something he kept mentioning. The only player not to turn their arm over was Ryan but more than made up for it with an excellent stint behind the stumps and performed one of the highlights of the day with a spectacular catch in the field (unfortunately off a no ball).

Chasing 212 to win was never going to be easy and so it proved with Waltham reduced to 29 for 3 off 12 overs. With Dan receiving a treacherous ball that kept low and Ryan also being bowled after pulling a huge six it was left to Sam and Matty to rebuild the innings with a partnership of 63 off 16 overs. This partnership contained a number of bat changes with Sam finally settling upon a bat akin to Valyrian steel as he started to make inroads into the deficit. Unfortunately Matty’s change in timber was more comparable to a block of “mouldy willow” as he succumbed to a juggled chance at mid-off and departed for 31.

Tucks approached the wicket with 120 required off 12 overs but with Sam increasing the tempo and some fine scampering a partnership of 83 in 9 overs kept Waltham in with a slight chance. Tucks (13) departed after attempting to repeat a glorious cover drive (county standard) which was soundly taken by the short cover. 37 required off 16 balls, 5 wickets down.

Jake, then strode to the pitch keen to play his natural game. Being a left hander and with the short boundary on the leg side there was potential of plundering some boundaries if he could connect. After swinging and missing it proved to be 3rd time lucky as he slog swept a towering six. 28 required off 12 balls.

Sam “Biggles” Harris was warming to the task and with 11 taken from the penultimate over he retained strike with 17 needed from the final 6 balls. The frozen crowd’s spirits were lifted by a 6 off the first ball, but with the next 2 being drilled at the fielders 11 were needed off the final 3 balls. A win was looking bleak. A soaring six brought about some parity and with a scampered double it was left with “Biggles”facing the final ball requiring 3 to win.

With Jake super charged, ready to run, “Biggles” Harris cover drove to the short boundary only to find safe hands. The throw wasn’t quite so secure leaving the bowler to decide whether to throw down the stumps from 20ft or settle for the draw. As the throw grazed the stumps the crowd screamed for a third run.

With Sam finishing on 124 and Jake on 7 victory was ours. As for Sam, it just proves that whether you’re a fan of ‘double denim’ or leather flying jackets that class shines through. Sam’s innings was simply amazing and his belief in his own ability (modelling himself on AB) as well as his team-mates never diminished at any point. If only they had bowled a leg stump yorker we could be looking at a different result.

Many thanks to Galleywood, who are likely to have an excellent season this year. And also to the parents and youngsters who supported and participated with a great deal of enthusiasm in the bitter cold. Let’s hope we have many more close finishes during this summer.

My Final thanks goes to the colts who all braved the cold and did a suitable umpiring stint, some more than others but it all counts!
