Ingatestone & Fryerning 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 13 May 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report The 1st XI moved onto the far reaches of Ingatestone as they attempted to win a second league game in a row following last week’s comprehensive victory against Eastwood. Winning the toss (again) I decided to mix things up and chose to bowl first. In other words, I had no idea what a good score was and what was going happen.

Josh and Tucks opened up and kept things tight for the first ten as the Ingatestone batsmen struggled to get away their nagging line and length. Josh was finally rewarded a wicket as Elliot missed a straight one after being set up with in-swinger after in-swinger. The two Braileys put together an impressive partnership and threatened to give the advantage to Ingatestone. Step forward the overseas, the kiwi express, the partnership breaker. It was rumoured that he turned down an IPL contract with the double Ds in order to be selectable for this game. Duggers ripped through the top and middle order bowling C. Brailey (40), Grobler (0) & Jeater (2) to reduce Ingatestone from 82-1 to 86-5. Sibley, making his first guest appearance of the season even managed to pick up a wicket as J Brailey steered a long hop to a one eyed backward point fielder.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep this momentum going, as an old Waltham flame (Todd) and Smith wrestled back control with an aggressive partnership of 67 just over 10 overs. This was probably aided by my rather wayward attempt at bowling for the first time this year. The returning younger Fitz was unable to make the breakthrough so once again it was left to Dugs as he struck with the first ball of his spell removing Smith for a well-made 32. Duggers finished with figures of 4-39 off his ten and deserved the fifer for his aggressive line. Pace off the ball was the next plan of action as Bloom Jnr was called into action. A smart caught and bowled removed Todd (32), with the rest of the tail falling quick to the mystery spin. Tucks returned to take the final wicket to set us a target of 175.

Not much needs to be said about the batting display. If you were there then you were witness to Dave single handedly take the Ingatestone bowling apart. If you weren’t then I’m sure you can imagine as we’ve all seen it before. The bowlers started tidily with four maidens in a row as Atul and DC seemed to be at the wrong ends for the appropriate bowling. When that finally righted itself Dave decided to greet Todd with a straight six to finally start the onslaught. Just as Ats started to get going, he cut the ball to point to give Grobler a wicket. By this point Dave was 49 and really starting to motor. The next ten overs were akin to a T20 game, or last’s week final few overs, as we scored 115. I scored a scratchy 36 but the show belonged to Dave as he brought up his 100 off just 72 balls, finally finishing with 125 off 83. Ten 4s and ten 6s typified Dave’s innings as he left the people in the flat’s opposite fearful for their windows.

Musings
1. Big runs… blah… big partnerships… blah… You get the picture but another hundred eclipses our total from the whole of last year and partnerships of 61 and 115 tend to do you well in games. We aren’t exactly top heavy either, Duggan was batting at 10 and could easily bat at 6 or 7 for most teams in the league.
2. We bowled well in parts again, although we have a tendency to just go off the boil every so often. Anyone who played in the Village Cup game on Sunday should be aware of the intensity we fielded with for the first twenty overs, especially, of that contest. We need to take that and carry it forward.

VIVO perfect catch of the match: Dan Bloom for the first C&B (Could have been anyone apart from Jitz and his first official (?) dropped catch since 2009 (?).

YES BANK Maximum sixes: Dave Clout, only ten was a tad disappointing really.

FBB stylish player of the day: M Duggan, international superstar, for changing the shape of the game.

MOTM: DC, read the rest of the match report

Muppet of the day: J Fitz, dropped catch (dolly) etc etc
