Bentley 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report The game ended up considerably tighter than it should have been but we won so I suppose that’s all that counts in the end. We’re top of the table despite the no result against Terling. I won the toss again, which is a nice little habit, and chose to bowl first on a scorching hot day. Not a particularly popular decision.

To suggest that we eased our way into the game gently would be somewhat of an understatement as we allowed Bentley to 66 with very little effort. Josh bowled 5 overs for 2 runs in his opening spell, it was just a shame the other 3 went for 28. He was able to make the breakthrough however, when he had Gordon caught at gulley. Ollie had Yorke caught quite spectacularly by Dave diving and rolling at mid on. Swanny really broke the back of the Bentley start though when he had Coleman adjudged LBW on 48. 66-0 had become 85-4 in a 9 over spell which we dominated.

From that position we were able to gain a foothold into the match and tighten our grip on the game. We bowled well in our partnerships, first Ollie and Swanny and then Swanny and Dugs. Between these three bowlers they picked up nine of the wickets. Duggers returned well after his first over mauling at the hands of Coleman to bowl another couple of spells, picking up 3 wickets along the way. Many remarked that was the best they’d seen Ollie bowl in some time, as he got 4 Bentley wickets, bowling with accuracy and swing into a strong, gusting headwind. Swanny, too bowled tightly, deserving his 2 wickets. Bentley ended on 205 all out, the third time out of four we’ve bowled out a team this year (we were well on the way against Terling too).

Our reply didn’t get off to the best of starts as Dave had a rare failure and was caught behind off the tricky Hammond. No-one heard it, Swanny wouldn’t have given it but DC walked off, much to his credit. Nindi was next to go, falling into a trap set by Hammond as he holed out to deep long on. It was up to me and Dan to rebuild, which we were able to fairly successfully, taking to score past 100. Dan was out shortly after, attempting to flick another six over deep midwicket but caught on the boundary. Just as me and Swanny were starting to develop our partnership, I decided it best to make the game interesting again by hitting the ball straight to cover. Swanny’s innings consisted of the fortuitous to start( a dropped catch) , as his lack of batting practice showed, before his destructive nature took over. A quick-fire 43 took us to down to 38 required off the last 10 with our lower order power hitters still to come. Another couple of good overs took us to 22 off 8. A breeze, surely. The next 5 overs yielded just 4 runs as we did our best to make things exceptionally hard for ourselves. Luckily our experienced overseas was able to find 3 boundaries in his 13 to seal the win.

ETC
1. 4 wickets for 19 runs in 9 overs brought us back into the game after a slow start. A testament to our fighting spirit? Or confidence brought about by winning games? Both?
2. I should probably be kinder about our bowling. 38 wickets in 4 games, 1 of which was rain reduced and shared amongst a variety of bowlers. 2nd only to Chadwell Heath in the bowling points tally. Minus the track against Terling, they’ve been fairly good tracks too.
3. The lack of time at the crease for our lower order thus far this season seemed to show on Saturday. We won, but I think a lot of us would prefer not to make it that close again.

VIVO perfect catch of the match: DC for his low, diving, rolling effort at mid on.

YES BANK Maximum sixes: Swanny (I think his went the furthest plus he was denied one in sightscreengate)

FBB stylish player of the day: Swanny for his typical innings (43 off 36)

MOTM: O. Fitzwater; 4 wickets and 3.5 runs an over bowling into a wind no-one wanted to have anything to do with.

Muppet of the day: O Fitz for attempting to pad his stats by running a three off the last ball when only a single was required.
