Chadwell Heath 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 167 runs

Match report The final game of the first half of the season saw the 1st XI travel to a park on the outskirts of London via any road not named the A12. Surprisingly team availability was the best its been since the first game of the season, a sign of my man management talents or coincidence? We’ll assume the latter. We were asked to bat first on a pitch which resembled a good day on Waltham’s outfield, much to the apologies of the opposition captain (in all fairness it didn’t play anywhere near as bad as how it looked). If I mention the fact I lost the toss again maybe I can turn my fortunes round, seemed to work the other way round when I was bragging about winning them all.

Our total probably wasn’t reflective of the true nature of the pitch, the ground and the overhead conditions. 50, maybe 60 runs above what many would consider par. None of us made it look easy in the middle apart from one man, head and shoulders above the rest. Considering the next highest score was 25 (all day), Dave’s 112 off just 90 balls was simply sublime. Even he started slowly, 4 off the first 16 balls, as it took time to adjust to the conditions. Dave found hitting the ball over the rope was considerably easier than hitting it through the outfield. The opening partnership of 110 in 23 overs set us up for the rest of the game. The famous West Indian side used to target the opposition captains as a sign of dominance. Dave took a particular liking to the opposition captain (Finch), at one point taking 21 runs in 7 balls. (thanks to the scoring skills of Ollie, inspired by JT). 8 overs at almost 10 an over. Dominated.

The series of contributions by the middle order illustrated the difficulty of the pitch as most of us were able to get in but never really push on to get 250+. Both Miles and Reynolds bowled well in the conditions, using them to their advantage to nab 3 poles a piece. We eventually finished on a score of 235, currently the highest score at Chadwell this year, another milestone we can proud of.

Chadwell never looked like getting close. Maybe the pitch deteriorated but I think we were well clear of any score they could hope to chase down. We didn’t quite hit our stride in the first 5 overs but the bowlers are bowling with such confidence at the moment that they believe they can pull it back and take wickets at any time. 13-0 after 5 overs suddenly turned into 25-3 after 10 overs. The top 3 had made the very long walk back to the edge of the boundary and then the very very long walk back to the pavilion. From there it was something of a procession. All the bowlers got wickets again, Josh 3, Chappy 4, Tucks and Duggers got 1 apiece. Chappy only denied a fifer by the opposition number 11 not being available. Oh and Gary got 4 dismissals (2 catches, 2 stumpings) , he's had a lot in the past few weeks.

Captain’s talk
1. I could talk about how Josh bowled with aggression and pace, or how Chappy bowled with unerring accuracy giving nothing away but I’m sure its something you’ve all witnessed this season or read about in these match reports. They did their job. I mean that with the utmost praise for the bowlers this season as it is almost expected of them to continue bowling at such high levels. I’ve used just 4 bowlers in a third of the league games this season and I’ve barely used our top wicket taker from last year. Quick look at the games reveals we’ve had one batsmen score a 50 against us all year(correct me if I’m wrong) and three 40s.

2. I think in every game this season someone or some people have taken it upon themselves to control the innings. It was a responsibility I don’t think we saw enough of last year and is a key reason we sit top of the table. This week it was Dave once again, 60 or 70 might have been enough but he took it upon himself to get to a hundred.

3. We’ve done a lot of hard work, a lot of good work thus far this season and we fully deserve to be top of the table. Bentley was the closest we’ve come to losing and we should have had that game wrapped up with overs to spare. Now we’ll have a target on our back for the rest of the season. Every team will want revenge for the first half of the season, every team will want to beat the table toppers and every team will want to stop our unbeaten run. We have to be aware of this and raise our levels accordingly if we want to achieve all we can this season.
