Rankins 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report An outstanding all-round performance from Rankins' Treen (4-32 and crucially 33 runs batting at no.6) gave the home team victory by 5 wickets in a tense finish.

With seven regulars missing through summer holidays and promotion to 1st team, Nindi lost the toss and we were invited to bat. Rankins have excellent covers, therefore the wicket was dry and good one to bat one. The homeside were also missing a number of regulars including the opening attack.

We started confidently and the bowling wasn't causing any issues. After one break for rain (game reduced to 43 overs), Treen bowled a good inswinging yorker and our captain departed (26-1). 9 runs later feeling in good nick, I managed to glance what I thought was 4 to the fine leg boundary, much to my surprise the keeper pouched one-handed (there are times when this game is very cruel).
Tom playing confidently and striking some lovely drives, 'feathered' one to the keeper, so fine that Nindi didn't hear it, Tom 'walked'. I mention this because it is so rare to see a young player walk, to play the game in the right spirit. Commendation to parents and all those involved in this young man's development, he is a credit to our club.

There followed a collapse and we were reduced to 54-5 and in danger of imploding with further adverse weather forecast. Cometh the hour, cometh the men. PA and Neil resurrected the innings initially with composure and then some sensible running and attacking. A fine partnership of 119 and we have had sights set on a score of 200. PA is our genuine all-rounder and plays the game with a smile. An invaluable 53 including 5 fours and 2 sixes (must be the bat he was using...mine) came to and end with Treen returning. Sadly for us Neil who had looked very assured, looking to accelerate us to a par score of 200 was caught soon after and a second collapse in the innings meant (173-5 to 180 all out) we had tea slightly disappointed. However we had the runs on the board and the home side were missing a couple of their regular batters.

One of the pleasures this year for me is to see the development of our colts. Firstly, Rhys playing his second game for the 2s opened the bowling with JT. Defining age and temperament, he bowled beautifully, swinging the bowl away. Sadly the league rules prevents us from bowling him more than 5 consecutive overs. His initial spell was 5 overs for 1 run, no wickets. Just the stated we needed and with JT removing Warner for 5, the game was in the balance.
The Rankins captain (Greenfield) clearly intent on not getting tied down was keen to hit boundaries. He offered three tough chances before being caught low by PA running in from the long-on boundary. Tom then claimed his second wicket by enticing the the opener Bolton to chip one to square-leg. Tom bowled with great flight and maturity. PA then swiftly bowled Toomey G for nought, the momentum was now with us.

At this juncture Treen swung the game back to the home-side with some important boundaries and scoring at better than a run a ball, we needed wickets. Nindi taking a good catch at cover to dismiss Treen, if we could get Ives out, victory could be ours. It was not to be and the home side won with 2 balls remaining. A great game played in great spirit on a lovely ground (also planes to watch for us spotters).

A special mention to Kieran Webb for fielding with enthusiasm and more importantly great skill and safe hands. He will no doubt have better days with the bat, however looked completely at home in the field.

Fours games left and we have still have the bottom two sides to play at home, these are games we should win and would secure our place in this division. Next week, we have players returning for our home fixture against Brookweald at home. Let's hope the weather remains dry.

Have a great week, ap
