Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Tillingham on Sat 22 Apr 2017 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts
Match report
New season, new fence, new Waltham. Playing a Tillingham team with 2 games under their belt already this originally looked like a tough task against the newly promoted division 1 team. Despite the early season weather, both teams fancied batting first on a pitch which had seen ~2000 runs scored on it last year. I of course lost the toss, in keeping with previous captains' traditions.
JT and JC started solidly, limiting the Tillingham batsmen scoring and beating the bat regularly. Tails getting the first wicket of the year, classically caught at point. Cummins and Mee built a solid partnership until Ollie convinced Cummins to give his wicket away by throwing in a sneaky wide, half tracker which Cummins thought best to spoon to cover. Convinced by the captain to stay on and fired up by this perceived slight on his bowling by his teammates, Fitz decided upon bowling a line and length to pick up the further wickets of Mee and Warren in a true seamer's fashion. The belligerent middle order of Tillingham hit back with some lusty blows to propel them to healthy, if not spectacular score, of 221. Both JT and Cam picking up wickets towards the end to restrict the batting team.
The batting was feast or famine for the few batsmen involved in the chase. Ats received an in - swinging yorker first up before Si was ADJUDGED LBW by JAMIE CARROLL. Despite the complaints to anyone that would listen that this was a grievous error, Simon was forced to watch the show from the sidelines. 66-2 at tea, requiring 160 from the remaining 20 overs seemed like a tall order. The next period of play can be only be described as clinical, brutal and destructive. Now I've finished talking about spurs losing I'll continue on to the batting. Although there was a new helmet perched upon his head and there was a dedicated approach to leaving the ball, DC looked like the DC of 2014 or 2011 or 2009. Authoritative cuts, pulls and drives over long on punctuated Dave's innings. Down the other end Dan continued his wonderful form from last year, stroking boundaries at will including a beautiful flicked six over square and a towering six over long on.
1. We managed to chase 160 in 17.1 overs to finish the game, including Dave patting and missing an over (lets try pushing ourselves towards 80-100 for drinks, I can't see why we can't 270+ regularly, especially at home).
2. We held all our catches, a rarity if anyone watched us last year.
MOTM: Clouty and Dan's partnership (can't choose)
Muppet of the day: Jamie Carroll for tripping himself up and then apologising.
