Tillingham 3rd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 1 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won By 70 runs
Match report
Great Waltham 3rd XI travelled to play Tillingham in an eagerly awaited rerun of the opening game of the season. The ground was in the back ‘garden’ of a Dutch cricketing enthusiast at Bradwell-on-Sea, an idyllic setting on the East Essex coast with the smell of Blackwater sea salt in the air.
The home side won the toss and elected to field on what looked to be a good batting strip. Elles and Webb were the usual opening pair as they reliably went about their business. After 10 overs Waltham were 43 for 0 and five overs on, they were 71 for 0. E & W were constructing an innings but as is the norm, both seemed to lose a little concentration as Elles departed for 41 in the sixteenth over and Webb for 22 an over later.
The wind turbines, masquerading as windmills, contributed to the Netherlands feel as Brown (6), Barker (24) and Eaglesham (3) were all caught in the field. Were the youngsters’ thinking of other Amsterdam attractions I wonder?!? Tanner entered centre stage and hit a barnstorming 46 with three colossal sixes to various parts of the ‘garden’. Harman (10) got a bat for the first time this season that ensured the Waltham Babes post a score of 204 for 8 from 40 overs.
Even the cricket tea had a Dutch feel to it. Stoopwafel, raw herring, Oliebollen and Edam cheese were on show along with a cool Heineken to wash the food down. Someone started to song….. I saw a mouse….. where..... there on the stairs….. where on the stairs…. right there…… a little mouse with clogs on….. well I declare…… going clip clipedy clop on the stairs!
Eaglesham and Tanner opened the bowling and Tillingham were soon 15 for 2 after 4 overs. Tanner had taken two key wickets and the hosts were going to find it difficult to recover. A plethora of bowling saw Chapman (0-3), Brown (1-6), Elles (1-7), Tokley (1-22), Barker Junior (1-6) and Reed (2-8) all enter the attack but the main attraction was yet to come.
With Barker Senior tiring in the field, a tactical substitution was made and the Joel Garner look-a-like Webb Senior, entered the fray. Bowling with pace and swing, Tillingham’s captain Mears was catch by Brown as the new recruit danced in delight. Bennett was the only other real threat carrying his bat for 30 as the hosts were all out for 134.
This ground could be described as the Garden of Eden or should it be Edam? A place where cricket lovers come to worship with a Dutch twist! #thefuturesbrightthefuturesorange - well for the day at least!
