Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 87 runs

Match report For those of you who missed Sunday’s game, in my opinion you missed something quite special. When complete bowling performances are mentioned, two spring to my mind. I remember being part of a team bowling Burnham Sports out for 77 (https://gwcc.secure-club.com/scorecard/fixtureID_175902/1st-XI-v-Burnham-Sports-I-28-May-2011.aspx) and the team that somehow defended 81 against Stock (https://gwcc.secure-club.com/scorecard/fixtureID_382190/1st-XI-v-Stock-2nd-XI-09-Aug-2014.aspx). This was better. The quality of the opposition was higher, the stage was bigger and the performance more complete.

Winning the toss, I chose to bat first on a tired pitch already beginning to show significant amounts of wear and tear due to the game time already played upon it. We were not greeted by an 80mph kiwi capable of swinging the ball both ways but steady, on the spot medium pace. Hard to get away. Si and Devs started steadily and without incident, patiently waiting for the bad ball and putting it away with authority. It was a shame when the straight drive king fell, breaking the opening partnership of 73. The next stage of play saw a flurry of wickets falls. We lost 5-35 in just under 10 overs to lose our strong middle order and grip on the game. The pitch was continuing to deteriorate and a score of 200 was looking like a winning score. Chappy, Duggers, Brown Jnr and Chappy Jnr made small but important contributions. However, the onus was upon Bloom Jnr to make a significant contribution and didn’t he just deliver. He made batting look easy on a pitch that was anything but. Unfurling straight drives, flicks and pulls as he caressed his way to 81* off just 56 balls. Only Watson was able to escape the onslaught as he finished with figures of 3-29. 206-8 represented a good return after the middle order collapse and the presumption that the pitch would degrade.

The start of the Worlington innings started badly for us as Peachey came out slashing the ball to all parts, hoping for a flying start. He fell after one shot too many, a brilliant running catch by Ryan and we were underway. The next five overs were simply faultless as the intensity, pressure and aggression of our bowling and fielding was too much for the Worlington batsman. 20-0 became 31-4 in 5 overs. Ollie and Josh gave nothing away to the batsmen inducing the loose shots. A stunning catch by Liam in the covers completed a wonderful first ten. In games previous we’ve had teams on the ropes and not been able to finish them off, the intensity drops and we let teams back into the game. That didn’t happen. The change bowlers, Duggers and Keaney, kept the pressure up and the feeling was there was always a wicket around the corner. The pressure (and pitch) finally told as the introduction of Chapman Snr brought about a wicket. Then Watson was sent back and run out by a brilliant piece of fielding from Lewis. Chappy threw back the years with his spell ending with 4-14 as he ran through the tail. 119 all out.

Everything else
1. Not entirely sure this report does the fielding performance justice. It evoked the spirit of 96 & 98 in some people although I can’t attest to that. We didn’t miss anything that came our way in the air or on the floor. The aggression we bowled with was simply superb, led by Fitz up front and exemplified by Chappy at the end.
2. Can’t stress how good an innings that was by Dan. Judge a pitch after both teams have batted on it. Dan’s innings was the difference between the two teams and he made batting look easy when almost everyone else struggled.
3. The crowd was awesome and I cannot thank you enough for the support. The roars following a wicket almost drowned out Chappy’s bellows.
4. A great win, which I’d very much like to build upon. The next round but also the next set of fixtures. 1st XI & 2nd XI. Take that intensity and level into the next game. Roll on Horndon – on – the – hill
VIVO perfect catch of the match: Keaney. Great, low, diving catch in the covers.

YES BANK Maximum sixes: Dan Bloom

FBB stylish player of the day: Mike, for that bowling.

MOTM: Dan Bloom. Sorry chapps but I’m a batsman and that was a bit special.
