Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Totham II on Sat 05 May 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
There is a saying that ‘catches win matches’, in the case of the seconds, that’s on partially true as we executed four ‘run outs’. Together with two calm, mature and unbeaten innings from Nindi (Prince of Romford) 74* and Phil (Pride of Essex) 43* we started the season with a comfortable 8 wicket win over the visitors Great Totham on a beautiful sunny day.
Robbo winning to the toss had no hesitation in inserting the opposition. Our opening attack of Cook, age north of 60 and Cameron Brown, age south of 20, perfect combination of youth and experience. Cameron nearly had Dickinson caught in his first over at point, soon bowled Chadwick, 16-1. There then followed what potentially looked a threatening partnership between Barrett and Dickinson. With the score on 47, Dickinson was run out from an excellent throw from Ryan and Matty smartly removing the bails on what always looked a dicey two.
The wicket was a typical early May, slow, ball not quite coming on and with the outfield also lush, boundaries were rare, just 10 in the whole of the visitors’ innings. With Barrett batting fluently on 48, hit a long hop to Neal at point, 102-3 off 24 overs, the opposition then never recovered and wickets fell at regular intervals, finishing on 154-9. In additional to the four run outs, steady bowling figures for all the bowlers, with Robbo (2-29) and Neal (2-16). A special mention to Rhys 0-20 off 7.2 overs and Cameron, 1-30, I cannot recall two young bowlers adapting so well to senior cricket. It would be remiss of me not to mention a truly brilliant piece of fielding by a 54 year old flinging himself to his left, to hang on to a one-handed catch at point inches from the ground. It was only at tea his wife mentioned that the on-looking opposition had described the movement as ‘Fell Tree’, how fast are 54 year olds expected to move?
As the sun shone all day, 155 to win should be a formality as long as we didn’t lose early wickets or in a cluster. Unfortunately for Matty, he was adjudged caught behind for 8, 9-1. Thankfully, Micky and Nindi then reasserted the initiative, both batting fluently, able to dispatch the bad balls to the fence. It was somewhat a surprise when Micky, having swept Kendall for four, then drove the next ball straight to Dickinson at cover, 56-2 off 16 overs. Thereafter, it was relatively plain sailing, the opposition did drop Nindi, regulation chance at point. Phil returning to the side, calm and composed and pulling anything short to the square leg boundary saw us home in the 39 over.
There are greater challenges this season, however these are the games we must not squander. A side note, we had six players over 50 and four under 20. Area to improve, our catching, I can recall at least four that were dropped, stronger opposition will make us pay dearly. On a positive note our batting should be stronger this year.
Next week, we travel to the newly promoted Great Wakering 1st. Here’s to continued form.
Enjoy the sun.
