Match report
A remarkable spell of bowling from P Patel ( no doubt we are related somewhere), 5 for 8 off 8 overs won the game for the homeside when we were well placed at 56-0 after 16 overs.
Having lost the toss, I was a little surprised the opposition choose to bat, however they know their wicket and on a hot day with fast outfield, they got off to a good start, 36 off 7 overs. With our youngest bowling line-up Harry gave us the break through, inducing the opposition captain to nick behind.
Thereafter the our bowling was steady and ground fielding good, unfortunately we dropped three catches, however Harry took three catches, including a ‘steepler’ on the cow-corner boundary, the longest on the field to dismiss the dangerous B Patel 34.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and Rhys finishing with his best league figures 4-29.
So 182 to win, I think I would have settled for that with one short boundary and a fast field. Micky and I got us off to an untroubled start and at drinks we were 55-0 off 15 overs. The wicket was a two-paced and when the spinners came on the nature of the game changed. Since my time at the club, there have been some good spinners in Div 1 however none of them compared to P Patel, whose wrist action was like Murali’s. His faster ball was quicker than I had faced from the seamers and playing back didn’t help and the dread rattled soon followed. What we needed was not to lose another quick wicket, sadly Micky having played well for 38 hit a full toss back and we were now 60-2. Wickets came with regularity and the spinner were able to exhert control on our run rate. We desperately needed one of the front line batsmen to make 80 odd to win, only three of us got in.
So we are now officially in a relegation battle and with Great Totham winning yesterday, next week’s game has even greater consequences to our destiny.
We have got some great young players coming through (Cameron, Harrison, Rhys, Jamie, Harry, Joe and Matty) and we need to keep encouraging them and they will pay great dividends. How I wish for a couple of them to invest some time in their batting. We’ve become too reliant on the 50+ age group for our runs. Next week we have ‘The Romford Express’ Nindi and our captain.
I’d like to thank Chappy for his effort yesterday to keep going when he was in pain. Also to all at Navestock, a friendly group of players I’ve played against and a lovely ground.
What an exciting prospect next Saturday. Here’s to win at Totham and England booking a place in the semi’s!
Enjoy the sun, ap
