Bentley 4th XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs

Match report Where does the scribe start this week………? A game we certainly should have won. A game which saw the Waltham Babes turn into the Waltham Golden Oldies. A game that mirrored similar weaknesses in previous weeks.

With the Trooping of the Colour fly pass taking place just before the start all was set to be an exciting encounter. The Green Caps won the toss and decided to put Bentley 4th XI into bat. The bowling partnership of Double D, Duncan and Death, were at it again, and the home side quickly found themselves 32 for 4 from 10 overs.

This week the pressure that the opening pair had built needed to continue as Cook and Deano entered the attack. Master Chef however found difficulty in finding his line and length but Harman set about the task in his normal speedy fashion. Opener Pagett was bowled for 4, who had been in for 10 overs and Aussie Mills gloved one to Webb behind but failed to walk despite a loud appeal from the Great Waltham fielders. The sixth wicket partnership with Mills Senior and Junior made 28 before both became victim of the ‘Harman Shuffle’. A further wicket saw Bentley 81 for 8 from 18 overs.

As in previous weeks, the opposition’s tail began to wag as the final two wickets put on an additional 45 runs in 11 overs. Both McRitchie and France were playing purposely but sensibly. Chappie was bowling economically but it needed a change in bowling attack to break the last wicket stand as Richards bowled France for 17. Bentley 128 all out in 32 overs – surely an achievable target?

Too often this season the Green Caps have got off to a poor batting start and today was no exception. With Gore, Webb and Eaglesham in the middle for a good time, not a long time, Great Waltham were 16 for 3 from 8 overs. Similar to last week, Chappie and Gav needed to steady the ship but unfortunately the outcome was slightly different. Chappie (16) was bowled by a good slower ball and Gav (8) was caught in the covers. This saw De’ath and Deano centre stage – if these two could stay together the game would be won.

After an entertaining 6, Deano (23) was bowled wanting to push the score on even more. Duncan (1), Richards (0) and Barker (3) were doing their best to hang around for De’ath but the score was now 97 for 9 from 24 overs and the game had swung heavily in Bentleys favour. Despite a final flourish between Master Chef (4) and Jake (26 not out), Great Waltham were all out for 116 - a disappointing defeat. #keepcalmandcarryon #thebabesarebacknextweek
