Bentley 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report If you’re a neutral and a fan of low scoring, tight affairs then this was the game for you. If you’re not then this game would have been a touch on the disappointing side. At the end of the day, despite our wonderful bowling performance, the batting was simply not good enough and eventually wound up costing us the game. It was such a shame to waste such a wonderful Ollie Fitz bowling performance as his 10 overs deserved so much more than a Waltham defeat.

We were put it into bat on a pitch that honestly didn’t play anywhere near as badly as the scores suggest. All was going well to start with as a 12 ball first over and watching Dave hit his first ball for 6 put us in a positive mood. The first 6 overs went relatively well as the bowling was met with a mixture of solid defence (Si) and attack (Dave). From then on it went downhill. The less said about Dave’s hole-out to deep long off the better; Si got himself into and then out of a kerfuffle, although the umpire disagreed and adjudged him LBW anyway; the captain feathered one down the leg side; Albie clipped a leg stump half volley to midwicket and Dan top edged a sweep after going scoreless for a long time. If this reads like a procession then it’s because it was. 35-0 after 6.1 to 55-5 after 16.3 does not make for pretty reading. An Englandesque collapse.

Fortunately the lower order were able to come in and do a handy job. Gary and Ryan formed a solid partnership after the chaos that had come before and seemed to have steadied the ship before Gary was bowled and not long after Ryan was making his way back to the pavilion. Thankfully we have Josh ‘I earned the little man fair and square’ Fitzwater down at 8 and Lewis ’look how many runs I made in the 2s last year, I should probably be batting higher’ Chapman down at 9. Batting depth has been extremely high for the last couple of years and situations like this illustrate why it’s so useful. A handy 9th wicket partnership 27 got us to 125 before Lewis was caught at backward point. If Joe and JT could hang around with josh then there would be enough extras and bad balls to get us to 150. Just something to bowl at. Joe departs first ball. Maybe JT can hang around bit. Let Josh do his impersonation of Jos Buttler. JT goes first ball. There goes the end of that plan. Hat trick for Dynes.

After a novel tea of chicken and chorizo skewers the team set out with the plan of taking as many early wickets as possible to see how fragile the Bentley batting line up was. With Josh giving limited support from one end Ollie, with the aid of the umpire, took it upon himself to bowl us into contention. In a Hammondesque bowling display Ollie took 5 of the top 6 Bentley wickets for just 8 runs whilst bowling 6 maidens. Chappy would be so proud. I haven’t seen bowling like it since Ollie took 5-7 playing in the 2nds in 2009. Jt was miserly in support from the other end as his 10 overs only cost 25 whilst picking up 2 wickets. After 20 overs Bentley were 49-7 and really struggling, if only we could make 1 more breakthrough then I’m sure the Bentley tail would have collapsed.

It wasn’t to be. It wasn’t without incident and a bit of luck but Waring and Yorke dug in and waited for the bad ball. With run rate never being an issue, they were able to stay patient. Josh caused a mild amount of panic in their ranks as he took the wicket of Waring for a battling 18 when Bentley were just 1 shy of their target. Alas there was no repeat hat trick and we subsided to a 2nd loss of the season. Absolutely no fault with the bowling performance, the issue was the lack of runs. The top order can all ask questions of themselves. How many of us were actually got out? How many of us played a poor shot or unnecessary shot?

VIVO Perfect Catch of the Match – DCs effort at slip coming forward.
TATA Nexon Super Striker of the Match – DC
FBB Stylish Player of the Match – JT 2 for 25
Man of the Match – This probably deserves to go to Yorke 3-31 and 53* but as this match report focuses squarely on Waltham we’ll cheat and give it to Ollie Fitz for some video game figures. Sorry we couldn’t back your performance up.
