Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Stock 1st XI on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 120 runs
Match report
We’ll do our best to concentrate on the good that came out of Saturday. In a game we were never expected to win, with availability being thin and the 2s in a hotly contested relegation battle (kudos for them on their win) the 1s were left slightly depleted against top of the table Stock. The plan was to bowl first and chase whatever Stock could get. The onus was on the top order to make as many runs as possible and hope for some lower order cameos. So the top order making 30 odd and getting out must have been the real reason we lost. No conversion.
The first 45 overs were for one reason or another exceptionally tough going. Just to give you an idea: it was the first time I’d bowled more than 8 overs since May 2014, the first time I’d bowled more than 9 overs since May 2012 and the first time I’d reached my full allocation of overs since August 2012, when 12 over spells were a thing. I won’t dwell on this innings too much for fear of an FA reprimand but I do believe we were harshly done by, on another day we could have been chasing 230 or 240 and had a reasonable shot at the game. As it turned out Stock found another 100 runs out of the all rounder batting at 4 and the game turned out considerably different. Having said that we had the opportunity to have him caught and the ball flashed through the slips a number of times early in his innings. Like I said, it just wasn’t our day. Credit where credit is due, the Stock number 4 hit a big, clean ball and made the most of his lives that he was given. He was supported well by Norton at the top of the order, who we dropped twice. Like I said, not our day. We all took some tap, only Josh going for less than 6 an over. On his return to the 1st team, Joe bowled with a lot of passion and fire once THE DECISION went against him. He deserved his 4 wickets.
At half time we knew we had a huge chase but if two of the top 4 could come off then just maybe we had a slim chance. Si and Dan started solidly but weren’t given much to hit by the stock openers and we were quite quickly behind the rate. In all honesty this innings was not about the top 4, despite what I’ve been trying to tell you through this report. We were all solid before finding a way to get out. The innings very much belonged to the lower order and the unsung batsmen. With the 2nd team back early after drubbing Rettendon and people turning up for the birthday boy’s barbecue, Great Waltham CC was filling up nicely. The cheers for every boundary scored were wonderful to hear and the main beneficiaries being Josh De’ath and Joe Reed. Joe scored 3 boundaries in 4 balls off the Stock all rounder in an attempt to find some karmic balance. Unfortunately it was over all too soon and it looked like the entertainment was over. Fortunately Gav (in line for the 3s batting trophy) and JT (not in line for any batting trophy, ever) had just a bit more up their sleeves for the adoring crowd. We first had Gav’s first 1st XI run and then his first boundary, a sliced cut behind point for four. JT then produced the shot of the day with an in-to-out drive over extra cover against the spin. It was all over a ball after but at least we’d provided a considerable amount of entertainment to the crowd and we hadn’t meekly capitulated. Sometimes it’s important to take away the successes and hopefully we can do that from Saturday’s game.
P.s Thanks to everyone who turned up to the club on Saturday evening. It was great to see the club so full. Special thanks to Brownie, Chappy and Gary for doing the barbecue.
P.p.s Happy 40th skip
