Great Totham v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 05 Sep 2020 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 43 runs
Match report
At 99-1 off 14.5 overs chasing 246, with the league's form batsmen (Duggers) well set on 60 (10 fours, 2 sixes), we were cruising. We then lost 5-25 off the next 10 overs, unable to score off the Totham spinners to lose by 43 runs. We now need victory away to Tillingham, then hoping Totham can win at Rayleigh to give us the 'title'.
Sadly, I've yet to win a toss this season and we were asked to bowl. Kieran swooping and throwing in one movement, the home Captain was run out by a yard, 7-1. Ronan then bowled a beauty to find Chadwick's edge to give a Josh a comfortable catch, 23-2. On the smallest playing field in Essex, our young bowlers bowled admirably, in particularly Grant who returned his best figures 3-32 off his allotted 8 overs, the figures would've been even more miserly, his second over going for 15. Ronan also bowled with good pace and control, 1-43 on that ground is perfectly acceptable, against a stronger Totham side compared to the one we defeated at home last month. Kinsella and Philips had added 84 for the 4th wicket, before Grant inswinger bowled Kinsella, looking well set on 58. Philips and Dickinson then added 76 for the 6th wicket, our fielding didn't wilt and Duggers (2-27) and Lloyd (2-46) ensuring we held the home side to a par score at tea and full bowling points.
I was confident we could chase down and leave with maximum points. Uncharacteristically we lost an early wicket when yours truly was bowled behind his legs, even now, I'm not quite sure how. Duggers and Phil then comfortable evened the balance of the contest, Duggers dealing mainly in boundaries. Chadwick bowling 'high tempting floaters' lured Duggers to tamely hit one back. Thereafter, Totham showed the value of having slow bowlers. Our young batsmen are showing much promise, however we must help them develop a plan to play slow bowling. Chadwick and McCausland combined figures 6-39 off 16 overs decided the contest.
Thankfully Ronan's belligerent 37, including 2 sixes and 5 fours, helped us secure an unlikely 4th bonus point. Having deposited Wheeler back over his head for a six, Ronan surprised, by sharing the news with everyone on the field it was his first EVER six. Much to the amusement of the Totham fielders who then duly shouted 'that's his second ever six' when an even bigger strike off Wheeler sailed over long off.
A special mention to Kieran's fielding, two run outs and a catch. His energy and intensity in the field yielded commendation from the opposition. And to our veteran, Phil, I don't know what his actual age is (its well north of 60), however he is still fielding with agility and batting with composure. Last season, I was asking "where are the young wicket-keepers"? I've been asking Josh and Kieran to share the duties. This season, both have developed their game and look more accomplished and set the tone for the rest of the side.
With the amateur football season in full swing, we are missing several key players, however 10 of yesterday's eleven are available for our final game next week, away to Tillingham and deserve a chance for glory.
Thank you to Simon for scoring willingly and for Andy Barker for umpiring.
Have a great week, let's hope Morgan's boys have inflicted further defeat to the Aussies:)
