Match report At 114-0 with 17 overs left, we were well positioned to post a competitive total, however Nick Cooch's 5-12 off 8 overs including 5 maidens effectively shifted the momentum of the game back in favour of the home side. That advantage was never ceased, giving the home side a comfortable win by 8 wickets, with Pankhurst 's unbeaten 83 pivotal.

With Rayleigh's emphatic victory against Totham we finished 2nd in the division, which is an excellent effort given the sparse availability of many 2nd team squad.

Having lost every toss this year, I changed from tails to heads and the coin duly fell on tails! Much to my surprise and pleasure we were asked to bat. Having had numerous opening partners in past season, one big discovery/success this season has been walking out to bat with our 'Overseas' Kiwi, who has discovered that he is actually an opening batsmen, who bowls a bit.
Yet again, we both looked comfortable and were able to score freely without taking any risks. We added our third century stand in 4 games - complacency was going to be our biggest threat. Credit to Cooch who's outswingers lured Matt (49) to mistime to cover and three overs later I played on. We'd subsided to 140-6 with 8 overs left. Another highlight this season as been the return of Phil (44*) to our line up. Calmly stroking the ball, one beautiful cover-drive was the highlight. Together with Oscar (13*), we got ourselves to a competitive total (193-6) possibly below par.

We would need to bowl well, field well and take our catches. Like many sides in this division, including us, all sides have two-three good batsmen, remove them and you are in control of the game. If Duggers has been the outstanding batter, Kieran has been setting the standard in the field. For the second consecutive week, he ran out the opening batsmen with another direct hit and gave us the early breakthrough. This is not an easy ground to defend, with a fast outfield and short square boundaries, both Issac and Ronan bowled well in the conditions, however we were not able to halt the scoring or bowl any maidens. The home captain Hylton and Pankhurst had added 74, when Duggers removed Hylton (33) - 85 for 2. I knew if we removed Pankhurst, 'WASP' ratio would be in our favour.
Uncharacteristically, we bowled too many wides (15) and were unable to hold on to a catch offered by Pankhurst when 80 were required to win. With Ashworth (51*), the homeside had no further alarms.

9 games, 3 abandoned (2 against the winners Rayleigh who we were in a good position), three defeats and 3 victories. Firstly, I'm grateful to Dave Cummings (of Tillingham) for setting up this mini-league. Even under covid conditions, I'd rather play than have a net. In this abbreviated season, we have learnt the value of having many youngsters. Many clubs will not survive future seasons without an infrastructure for youth cricket. We have some genuine young talent at the club and it's our responsibility to ensure:
1. We provide them an opportunity to play senior cricket;
2. We help them develop and become technically better players. Yes, it's great to be a part of a winning team, however if they feel they are not contributing with runs/wickets, they will not be motivated to sacrifice their weekends; and
3. Playing for Great Waltham is fun. There is a great spirit at the club and we mustn't get complacent about facilities, practice, supporting social events.

Thank to all the players, supporters and volunteers who have made my role in leading the team hugely enjoyable. Not having to worry about who is going to score (thanks Simon), umpire or drive to away games. I will be happy to hand back the reigns Chappy next year and fingers crossed we'll have a full season and full squad to select from.

Statistically it would be negligent to leave my final report without a special mention about our overseas - Matt Duggan, 436 runs at an average of 109 (2 centuries), 12 wickets at 10.58 and 4 catches. Our player of the season. This year, he broke his bat of 28 years! I know 'Duggers' is careful with budget, however I'd urge him to invest in a fine piece of willow for 2021. Secondly, I do hope Sam will allow him to continue to play for the seconds next year:)
