South Loughton CC v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
(report from league website)
Great Waltham at 19-2 with persistent rain, many minds wondered if the game could be completed, (what formation will Southgate pick tonight?). The forecast for the afternoon wasn't encouraging. Thereafter there was one break for rain and the game resumed and an exciting afternoon's cricket saw the league leaders consolidate the position and further drive their ambition to win division 3.
On a slow wicket, the Great Waltham batsmen first intent on not collapsing from 19-2, consolidated with Richardson (47) and Patel (19). Both began to accelerate when Patel was caught, 74-2. Runs started to flow for the visitors and sprightly running from Hariram, Brown and Webb, enabled the visitors to post a completive total 163-6. Bowling honours Vasanthan 3-47. Special mention to 15 year old Harry Smith who bowled beyond his years to finish 0-38 off 10 overs.
In response the home side started well and Baker (52) in a rich vein of form scoring freely. Great Waltham will rue dropping him on single figures. Chalk made the breakthrough, captain Stokes departing for 8, 42-1. Thereafter the momentum swung to the visitors as wickets fell at regular intervals. The visiting captain bowling beautifully 2-16 off 10. The leaders had plummeted to 75-5. Hill started to rebuild and leasing fluent drives, was distraught when he drove straight to mid-off, 96-6.
There followed and excellent unbeaten partnership between Pavey (34) and Vasanthan (23), sensible running, littered with the occasional boundary. The homeside winning with 10 balls to spare on a sunlight afternoon.
