Rettendon v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 112 runs
Match report
After ending our winless streak the previous week, Waltham moved on to Rettendon on perhaps the windiest day of the year so far. Despite the rain the previous night, the pitch looked incredibly dry and I chose to bat first. I was reliably informed half way through that 360 was a par score but more on that later.
Reedy and Dan opened up as they have all year and quickly found out the pitch was hard going. Up and down bounce and at least 5 different paces. The only reason for quoting an absurdly high par score was the incredibly small boundary towards the trees one way. The score ambled on to 67 off 19 overs before Dan decided to take his first risk, unfortunately it was his last of the day as one pitching half way down didn’t get above the shins and Dan was struck directly in front. Reedy was out soon after, middling one onto his pad, disappointed at the decision. Gary was out in a similar fashion to Dan and we were suddenly 3 down, in danger of throwing away the platform that had been set by the openers.
After giving Si 2 weeks away from the game to clear his head in Marbella, an excellent captaincy decision if I’ve ever seen one, Si turned up hungry and without any mental injuries caused by a long season. Obviously, we’ll ignore the first few balls as the rustiness took some time to wear off but after that Si was as fluent as I’ve seen on a pitch that was getting more difficult to bat on. Having put on 55 with me in 11 overs, it gave the lower order beasts a chance to propel us to something we could defend. The Richardson made a welcome return, however Si was eventually run out (Jamie?) for a well-crafted 49, one short of a well-deserved maiden 50 of the season. A last over assault by Duggers, 3 boundaries, saw us finish on 211.
Anything north of 200 was going to be a tough chase despite what the opposition may have said and so it proved to be. Butler was out in the first over as Gary took a smart catch, Plummer out in the next over, adjudged LBW with hints of a miniscule inside edge. Sutherby came out looking imperious and struck some nice boundaries before being undone by a wonder caught and bowled by Ollie Fitz. JT will tell you his sliding catch to get the number 10 was catch of the day but Ollie’s one handed snaffle as the ball was whacked back at him by Sutherby most certainly won that award. It also started the demise of the Rettendon innings.
3 down and we were now on top with both bowlers targeting the stumps on a pitch continuing to do bits. Ollie found his rhythm up the hill into the wind and took 4 of the top 5. Yes, some were drag ons but the pitch was never conducive to shot making. Ollie was apparently miserable as he couldn’t have everyone caught in the slips but the rest of the team didn’t care as we got deeper into the Rettendon batting line up. Josh down the other end was looking equally as dangerous and after a short, refreshing rain delay we continued where we left off by continuing to take wickets. Josh bowled another couple of Rettendon batsman with some seeds and GWCC were looking at a consecutive win and a rare away victory.
Both Fitzwater brothers bowled 10 overs straight in another feat of superhuman opening bowling strength from the two of them, leaving JT to mop up the only remaining batsman. Ollie finished with 6 wickets, although you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. He took 4 out of the top 5 and numbers 9 and 10, showing he can also take the bunnies when required to. Rettendon were eventually all out inside 22 overs for just the 99 runs as Waltham ran out clear and deserved winners. Can we make it 3 in a row next week at home to table topping Tillingham. Find out next time.
