Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Totham 2nd on Sat 04 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs
Match report
On a cold blustery, damp, often sunny day, we fell short by 37 runs against Great Totham II, their first victory against us since 13th August 2016. It was a game the visitors controlled and never surrendered the momentum. Our catching (3 dropped) came to haunt us and ultimately the visitors 228-9 was above par on a sluggish surface.
Winning the toss, Neil elected to bowl, our bowling was thin with a couple of regular seamers absent (playing for 1st/unavailable). The 3rd team player of the year Gav invited to open the bowling. The visitor’s openers getting away to a fine start, boundaries flowing, we came off for rain, 60-0 off just 11 overs. We welcomed back PA, whose accuracy and experience we missed last season. He bowled with great control and probably deserved more reward. He was 3 balls away from his allocation when the ‘hammy’ pinged. He claims he has never suffered this type of injury. We wish him a speedy recovery and need him back in the ranks.
90-0 off 17 overs became 146-4 off 28. The visitors middle order batted sensibly and managed to tick the boundary count to 23 when the innings concluded, 228-9. Other than PA, Cam Brown bowled well and in Harris, we have a future off-spinning all-rounder. Lewis pulled off a brilliant run-out off his own bowling, running to mid-wicket and hitting the stumps to run out Chadwick with 1½ stumps to aim.
229 to win off 45 overs would require a solid start and two of our batters to get 60-70 odd to win. Micky and Harrison opened, both getting ‘in’ and getting us off to solid start 63-0 off 15 overs, part one accomplished. In the next 4 over, we fell to 87-3. Rebuilding with Nindi and yours truly, we manage to keep the scoreboard ticking over. However crucially neither of us or any of our other batters to could the boundaries we required, in total 17 compared with 23. Credit should also go to the visitors bowling and their captain’s field setting. It’s not often I’ve seen Nindi’s strike rate at 54%. Would have been an added bonus had we scored another 9 runs to secure maximum batting points, sadly we lost Lewis to the first ball of the last over.
So what have we learnt? We missed our bowlers (Rhys and Harry), we cannot drop regulation catches and way too many easy balls to hit for opposition batters to hit boundaries…that’s enough analysis for the first game. On a positive note, all our batters spent time at the crease and fielding in the cold is not easy.
Off to Great Baddow next week, I’ve only played their once in 9 seasons for the club. I do recalling getting runs and winning comfortably, may that trend continue next week.
On a separate note, many congrATULations to Kieran Webb, 93 to see the third team to victory and our ladies, who won comfortably by 8 wickets. Finally, it would be remiss not to mention the stand-in first team captain Dan Bloom on what Clouty described as the best innings he has seen Dan play for the club, 134 not out, sadly we fell agonisingly short by 5 runs.
Enjoy the bank Holiday, ap
