Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Wakering 1st on Sat 18 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 192 runs
Match report
Yesterday at the PGA Championship, having missed the cut, Tiger Woods tweeted "There will be days like this". Having watched from the sidelines with a swollen knee and looking at Robbo's expression at the end of the game, where we subsided to one of our heaviest defeats in the last two years, Robbo may well be echoing a similar phrase.
For 35 minutes, all was going better than planned, with Ninid unavailable and yours truly joining PA on the treatment table, Robbo won the toss and invited Great Wakering to bat. The ball was carrying at chest height in Ryan's gloves and the opposition batting looked weaker than last year. Soon they were 22-3 off 7 overs with the top three back in the pavilion, a couple for Cameron and one for Rhys. Sadly, that was our Everest, we were soon chasing leather as the oppositions' two best batsmen Smith and Bunce compiled 120 at 6 an over. The opposition were to hold the momentum for the rest of day and won by staggering 192 runs.
Full credit to Smith, last year he was over confident when well set, this year, we gave him and Bunce way too many easy balls to dispatch to the boundary. At one point 12 of 20 balls bowled were full tosses, it's simply not good enough and to good players, it's charitable. Let's give Smith full credit for an unbeaten 169, t's was a lovely knock, however he should have been caught on the boundary when the total was 82, what could have been. Bunce (34) is a good player and became Harrison first victim by playing over a full delivery. Overall (32) continued to play with freedom and Patterson applying some lusty blows to edge the visitors over psychological 300! Cameron 3-48 was the pick of the bowlers and Rhys' 1-45 was better than the figures suggest.
So at tea we contemplated 306 for victory. Micky and Keiran got us off to a positive start, racing to 39 off 7 overs before Keiran (19) was bowled by Mayhew. We needed a top 4 batter to get three figures if we were to have a smidgen of hope. In the 16th over Micky looking well set on 38 and the total on 67, Micky was adjudged LBW. The rest of the batting soon came crumbling down and worryingly we didn't even manage one batting bonus point. A fine spell of off-spin by Deadman 5-14 off 10 overs including 5 maidens gave the visitors a victory before the final whistle was blown in the FA Cup final.
So there is a worrying trend developing in three games we have bowled just 5 maidens compared to the oppositions' 15! I know we have a very young bowling group, however in all three games we've not been able to apply any pressure on opposition batters. Let's keep the faith, they are young and running in with courage and as Tiger said..."there will be days like this" :(
Let's not dwell, one day of rain will not ruin a summer. Onwards and upwards, we travel 15 minutes to Rayne next week, hoping to have a couple of regulars back and posting a second win of the season, we need 8 victories and our batters and need to get bonus points.
Not a great weekend as I write, all green caps have succumbed, not a single victory this weekend, I feel sorry for the 1st team captain, who's fine hundred was not enough. Good luck Sunday team.
