Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Stock 2nd on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
The last occasion I played in a game that finished this early was 3rd May 2014, when I had the embarrassing experience of captaining the 1st team to 9 wicket defeat, having been bowled out for 36 at Canvey! Yesterday the game was concluded by 355pm, having bowled Stock out for 58 and eventually we stumbled to a 6 wicket win. Saturdays are allocated for cricket and I could have won some 'wife credits' by surprising my beloved by arriving home early, however in my experience, this often involves me buying supper or interrupting her trimming the bushes or gin drinking solitude. So sensibly a number of us desperate to watch some cricket (and as neither England or India were playing in WC), we drove to Hatfield Peverel to watch our Third team consolidate the position at top of Div 10.
We lost the toss and were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves invited to bowl. The ground looked at it's picturesque best, John Warn had 'rolled' the wicket at 10am, the outfield cut the day before. We had a strong side and with the addition of Jamie Carroll returning, both bowling and middle order batting was further strengthened. Rhys and Cameron bowling a tight line didn't allow the visiting openers to 'get away', the short ball kept being hit to fielders. The wicket was playing fine however the deluge of wet weather earlier in the week had removed any 'carry' in the wicket. Rhys soon tempted Mason to drive on the up to wide mid-off where Brother Lewis moving smartly to his left made a tricky chance look easy. The opposition captain Hurrey was looking secure and settling to play a long innings when Jamie bowling his first over bowled him with a sharp off-break. None of the other batsmen offered evidence of applying themselves. Boycott would have been livid at some of the shots, however full credit to our bowlers who all bowled well and as you would expect when the 10-man opposition are bowled out for a paltry 58, the bowling figures are impressive.
In recent weeks Harry has started to find rhythm and immediate in-swing, in tandem with Jamie, the opposition were bowled out in 27.3 overs. Harry 4-16, Jamie 4-20. A word about Lewis' catching who held a skier at mid-off and clearly is happier without the gloves, the overall fielding was sharp.
The opposition captain hadn't built up an appetite and suggested we should delay tea. Micky and I strode out and Nindi bellowed 'let's do this for no loss'. Micky was quickly dispatching Robinson to the square boundary and had clearly decided that he could get back home to watch a box-set. He was bowled by Taylor 13th ball of the innings. 'The Romford Express' had also announced his arrival with a couple of drives to the long on boundary. He was desperate to 'get after' Taylor. In between overs he said, 'let's take it easy for a coupe of overs and not play any silly shots'. I minute later I felt like saying 'Do as I say not as I do' when he mistimed to mid-on. Ryan then toe-ended to mid-wicket, 31-3, surely we couldn't mess this up. Reminiscing back on 9th August 2014, we were bowled out for 81 by Stock, remarkably we won by 11 runs. Although we also lost Lewis, defeat was never in the equation and with Harrison, we walked off having won by 6 wickets and nestled 2nd in the table...heady days.
There are a couple of us missing next week, however the squad is suitably strong and with our Third team having a break from league fixtures, I expect a tougher game next week at South Woodham, though very optimistic.
Good luck lads.
