Match report
In a rain reduced match (30 overs), we came agonisingly close to defeating the division leaders. With 10 required off the last over, a mis-field for 4, left us requiring 3 off two balls and 2 off the final ball, sadly the home captain bowled a brilliant yorker which Cam was not able to lay bat on, the ball ricochet off the keepers pad half a metre only, preventing Duggers from scrambling a single to tie the match...oh how sport hurts.
With Robbo in Turkey, yours truly had the honour of leading the side. Toss successfully negotiated, won and with rain expected, invited home team to bat. With Rhys being promoted to the first team, we had the experienced JT in the side and Cam back from summer hols. JT bowled beautifully and probably deserved more wickets. After 6 overs the opposition were 36-1 and we headed to the pavilion to evade the downpour. Early tea, we resumed with the match reduced to 30 overs. Our ground fielding has been good this season, exemplified by Lewis's performance behind the stumps, another game with no byes, which is quite a feat consider the slow nature of the wicket. The same cannot be said of our catching and in recent weeks, we have floored 8 chances in two games, 7 of them scaling 1-2 on the difficulty chart. The home batsmen N Smith is a fine player and this season has scored 232 runs against us with being dismissed. Yesterday we dropped him when on 22, like a lot of sides in this division, dismiss their one or two better batsmen, the destiny of the game is in your control. Harry (3-48) and Duggers (2-44) ensured the chase (178) was well within our reach.
Micky and Luke got us off to a solid start and up with the required rate of 5.5, when Deadman bowled Luke with his second ball sweeping, the right shot, however the ball kept a tad lower than expected, 39-1. 5 overs later Micky holed out to deep mid-wicket, 64-2 off 13.3. Lewis' batting this season has been assured, having played some crucial knocks for us. We has swung the momentum in our favour and the scored had reached 126, 52 required off 48 balls, when i pushed to long-on, not having timed the ball, called two with Lewis having to run to the supposed danger end, inexplicably I sent Lewis (31) back and left him stranded. I can think of a few players who would have had a communicated their displeasure with colourful language.
Duggers (29) batted well and with Swanie and Cam, nearly took us to victory.
With Great Totham winning yesterday, we remain third and our remaining fixtures are against sides that have not beaten us. With a good squad and good availability, we still have an opportunity to push for promotion. We will start as favourites next week, home to Rayne, let's ensure there is no complacency.
We are expecting a heatwave next week, ah how I look forward to batting at home. Have a great week.
