South Woodham Ferres 3rd v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 18 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report This was a game that Great Waltham 3rd Xl could and perhaps should have won. They started well, stalled in the middle and finished strongly but didn't quiet get over the line in a nail biting final over. South Woodham Ferrers won the toss and put the Green Caps into bat. With Spen-Dog having played two key innings in the first two games, another was needed but he quickly 'holed-out' to mid on for a single. It was now Alfie and Gavlar in the middle and at 8 for 1 after 3 overs, a steady partnership was needed.

New to the role of opening batsman, Alfie showed control and patience in the middle. In fact Gavlar was out scoring the youngster. 27 for 1 after 10 overs became 77 for 1 after 20 overs. A great platform was being set and a score of 170 plus runs looked on the cards. The South Woodham Ferrers 'quickie' Cox bowled Gavlar for 44 runs as the second wicket partnership made 84. The Green Caps were 93 for 2 from 26 overs. Alfie was still in the middle showing good restraint. He punished the bad ball and blocked the good one. Spen-Dog alternated the batting order with youth and then experience. Brittain was now at the crease but could only make 2 runs and Kent tried to push the run rate in the latter overs. 126 for 4 from 35 overs.

Eaglesham Junior was enjoying himself and in the last two overs pushed the score onto 152 for 6 from 40 overs. He carried his bat and made a fine 69 runs. This did however look 20 runs short of a good total - only time would tell.

The South Woodham Ferrers top order started well. McGarry Senior was caught leg before wicket by Galvar but Cox and Cruickshank were looking threatening and at 111 for 1 from 25 overs the game looked lost for the Green Caps. The old quote of 'catches win matches' springs to mind and dropping Cox twice hadn't helped the cause! It's a funny old game cricket and with this dismissal the tide totally turned. Great Waltham were now on the front foot and the home teams runs had dried up. Great spells from Elles and Webb bodes well for the future and with Richards now at one end and Galvar at the other the game was in the balance.

Richards bowled both Pretty Senior and Junior and with the final over to be bowled South Woodham Ferrers needed 4 runs to win the game. Gavlar bowled two dot balls. Four runs needed from 4 balls. A full deliver and the youngster Dumas hit the ball for 3. The game tied and with two balls remaining the pendulum again had swung in the home teams favour. A scampered single and victory to a jubilant South Woodham Ferrers 3rd Xl. Great game. Competitive but fair. We look forward to the return fixture in mid July. #wegoagainnextweek.
