Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Hornchurch Ath 4th on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Match day 7 saw first play third in the league and with an extremely rainy week, where only the ducks had a smile on their face, the pitch was green and looked as if it would be low in bounce. Deano won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Hornchurch Athletic into bat. With the De'ath brothers and Tanner in the side, Great Waltham looked to have a strong line up and all were keen to keep the Green Caps on top spot.
With James Kent and Jake De'ath opening the bowling, pressure was soon created and with the first three overs seeing no runs from the bat, Hornchurch Athletic were 5 without loss. Deadly De'ath took the first wicket bowling S Duke for 0 and this impressive bowling stint continued with two further wickets. Josh De'ath took a catch in slow motion, that caused much amusement, and the visitors were 21 for 3 from 12 overs.
In the next stage of the game the Hornchurch experience was facing the Waltham youth. Kershaw (21) and R Ponting (27) were giving Elles and A Webb a difficult time and sensible captaincy saw Tanner enter the attack. One of the highlights of the game saw Elles take a 'worldie' slip catch of the bowling of Tanner to dismiss Ponting. Great Waltham captain Deano bowled Hornchurch skipper Rehman for 18. Richards bowled five tidy overs and the Green Caps were back on top - 101 for 6 from 33 overs.
The Waltham youth were now bowling to the Hornchurch youth and an achievable target was on the cards. Elles bowled Phillips for 10 and Deano bowled B Duke for 5 - Hornchurch Athletic 120 for 8 from 40 overs. With six of the eight wickets being bowled this gave the visitors a clear indication on how to play the pitch conditions.
Spen-Dog and Joshua De'ath opened the batting offering power and precision. Spencer was bowled by a very low unplayable ball - Great Waltham 20 for 1 from 5 overs. Gavlar was extremely unlucky to be caught at second slip with the ball ricocheting off of first slip - 27 for 2 from 8 overs. There was a need for a Great Waltham player to occupy the middle.
Enter Luke Tanner. Quick to hit the bad ball with great power, the scoreboard started to tick over. De'ath was batting technically well and with Tanner gaining the strike wherever possible the game got away from Hornchurch. Tanner's 50 came from 35 balls and with great support from De'ath (32), this saw the Green Caps home in a mere 19.1 overs. Over 20 overs to spare.
Well done all, especially the Great Waltham 3rd XI player who was called up at the eleventh hour. His fielding was slow but umpiring accurate. His match reporting time consuming yet completed. Well done to you sir. #thefuturesbrightthefuturesgreen.
