Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Rainham 4th on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
With no game last week, due to T Rippon Division 10 only having nine teams, match day 7 became match day 9. Rainham 4s, new to the league this season, were the visitors and on a glorious day, the stage was set. Deano won the toss and as always invited the visitors to bat. This might have been more to do with his social diary than cricketing tactics, but why disturb a winning formula?
The opening bowling partnership of Jake De'ath and Richards found difficulty in finding their rhythm and with wides being the top scorer after 6 overs the attack was changed. By taking a little pace of the ball, Kent and Joel Barker found more accuracy and 23 for 0 from 6 overs became 28 for 3 from 9. Barker had bowled both Jackson and Little in his first over and Kent got a bowl to swing to trap Fevzi-Hunt leg before wicket. The Great Waltham Green Caps were on top!
Young Stouchbury and the energetic Tamma were now in the middle. Both looked able cricketers. Stouchbury calm and technically correct. Tamma always looking to punish the bad ball and score freely. This fourth wicket partnership put on 77 runs and it wasn't until the spin of Gavlar being introduced, that the Green Caps regained some control. With Stouchbury caught and bowled by Gavlar and Tamma being bowled by Freddie Rolfe, Rainham were 102 for 5 from 24 overs.
Gavlar was now up to his old tricks. Enticing the less experienced youngsters to hit him out of the ground, Porter was bowled first ball, Dordoy leg before second ball and Patel bowled fifth ball. Forget Derek Underwood. Forget Phil Edmonds. Forget Ray East. We've got Gav Reed! With the father and son pairing of C and D Vickers at the crease the Rainham tail wagged a little. 131 all out from 32.4 overs.
A fiery start from Rainham saw them gain 3 quick wickets. Josh De'ath was stumped in unusual circumstances off the bowling of Patel, brother Jake bowled by youngster Sutton and Spen-dog bowled again by Patel. 18 for 3 from 7 overs. Calm heads were needed and these were provided by Deano and Kieran Webb. The dynamics of running between the wicket all of a sudden changed. Scampering for ones and twos and a few lusty blows put the Green Caps back on track. 74 for 3 from 13 overs.
Deano was athletically caught by Tamma off the bowling of Fevzi-Hunt for 27 run, but I think it should have been 33 as Kieran said he didn't hit a 6! He hit 52 runs, but I think it should have been 46 as Kieran said he didn't hit a 6! Having clapped Webb's half century, the scorer takes full responsibility for this. The 50 stands and will be included in the stats!
The final runs were knocked of by Rolfe and Barker in quick fashion. 134 for 5 from 21.3 overs. One final observation - there is a fine line between chirpy enthusiasm and being disrespectful. The adults set the tone and let's move on. We look forward to travelling to Rainham 4s on the last game of the season. #backontop.
