Springfield 5th v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 106 runs
Match report
This top of the table clash saw Great Waltham 3rd Xl play Springfield 5th XI at Admirals Park, Chelmsford. With Springfield scoring lots of runs in recent weeks, the Green Caps would need to be at their best to be competitive. Deano won the toss and decided to bowl. What score would Springfield post?
The opening pair of Steve Morritt and Harvey started well. The left handed flare of Morritt and the right handed patience of Harvey were able to score freely. 61 for 0 from 10 overs. By this time Barker and Rolfe were in the attack. On a quick dry outfield the fuller delivery was more successful and Rolfe got the first wicket of Morritt (72) caught by Richards. 103 for 1 from 18.4 overs. McCloud was bowled by A Eaglesham for 3 and this saw the arrival of Murugesh.
This flamboyant player looked to hit every ball for four and scored a powerful 50 from 29 deliveries. Good fielding had seen two spectacular run outs but the fifth wicket partnership between Murugesh (80) and Vince (31) turned the game. 115 for 4 from 25 overs became 220 for 5 from 36.1 overs and the game was running away from Great Waltham 3rd XI.
In the eventful thirty seventh over 3 wickets fell but the talented youngster Alex Morritt hit a quick 14 runs and the final score posted was 242 for 7 from 40 overs. Pick of the Waltham bowlers were Rolfe, 1 for 26 from 8 overs, and Josh De'ath, with 2 for 27 from 4 overs. Josh Fall did superbly well behind the stumps too. This seemed to be a par score for the home team but a score never chased by the visitors before.
A good start was needed but Waltham wickets were lost on a regular basis. Mean was bowling down the slope with pace and precision and youngster Lloyd swinging the ball both ways. De'ath, Alfie Eaglesham and Barker didn't get going and the Green Caps found themselves 22 for 3 from 12 overs. Rolfe tried to raise the tempo but failed - 32 for 4 from 14 overs.
Deano and Spencer scored as quickly as they could as the fifth wicket partnership made 57 runs. With the captain departing for 45 a trio of wickets fell at 95 and the game was technically over. Ashurst's fifth over saw his figures change from 30 for 0 from 4 overs to 31 for 3 from 5. The tail wagged a little with Kent scoring 23 runs but Great Waltham 3rd Xl made 136 from 29.1 overs. A decisive 106 run win for the home side.
Well played Springfield. No need for the 'Super Over' in this encounter! #wegoagainnextweek
