Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v South Woodham Ferrers 3rd on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 79 runs
Match report
After the disappointment of last weekend and a wet rainy Friday, Great Waltham 3rd Xl were pleased to get Match Day 12 underway against South Woodham Ferrers 3rd Xl. At the start of season the Green Caps had lost against South Woodham so all were looking for a win. The visitors won the toss and with the greenness of the wicket had no hesitation in putting Great Waltham into 'bat. With Gavlar back from his 50th birthday celebrations and Alfie Eaglesham opening the batting a speedy start was on the cards. 53 for 0 from 10 overs with Alfie hitting his first ever six!
With Great Waltham batting first it would be interesting to see if the team could bat their 40 overs. A tactic that had not happen often, if at all, since the formation of the third eleven. The South Woodham captain was now in the attack and a very low skidding deliver saw Alfie return to the pavilion for a solid 37 runs. At this stage in the game Gavlar kept pinching the strike as Josh De'ath watched from the other end. This was totally unintentional from the opener but it seemed to unsettle Josh. McGarry took his second and third in quick succession as both Josh and Kieran Webb were bowled by the visitors skipper. 81 for 3 from 19 overs and the 200 target looked in doubt.
Enter Spen-Dog, batting at five for the first time in a while. This partnership between he and Gavlar would need to be a productive one. The ship needed to be steadied and with McGarry 'bowled out' the scoreboard started to tick over again. Liverpool had Keegan and Toshack. The BBC had Morecambe and Wise. ITV have Ant and Dec and Great Waltham 3rd XI have Galvar and Spen-Dog. With the couple complementing each other in so many different ways the innings took off. Gavlar tickling the ball all around the square. Spen-Dog smashing the ball straight whenever possible. 81 for 3 from 19 overs became 203 for 3 from 37 overs and and a partnership of real beauty had taken place. Some might say Beauty and the Beast had been at work! With Gavlar (76) caught at square leg, the innings finished on 221 for 4 with Spen-Dog making 75 not out.
The South Woodham innings started slowly - 22 for 0 from 10 overs. The trusty duo of Richards and Kent opened the bowling but youngsters Payne and Oscar Duggan were soon in the attack. Both were bowling very economically and at the half way stage the visitors were 64 for 0 from 20 overs.
With Josh Fall replacing Kieran Webb behind the stumps at the half way stage, Josh De'ath finally got the break through needed. Bowling a range of 'diberly doberlies', J McGarry was caught by Webb from one of De'ath's 'doberlies'. 66 for 1 from 21 overs became 117 from 5 from 34 overs. With the game now won as the run rate increased all Great Waltham bowlers contributed to the tight bowling display. Richards returned to the attack and got two quick wickets. Well played everyone. Final South Woodham Ferrers score 142 for 7 from 40 overs and a victory by 79 runs.
With Springfield's game against Tillingham victim of the weather, the Green Caps clawed a few points back in the fight for top spot. #alltoplayfor. #dontgiveup. #thefuturesbringthefuturesgreen.
