Match report
On a warm early August Saturday what is better than to spend a day at the seaside, and so it was that the GWCC 3rd XI boys headed to the coast for this Division 10 clash against mid-table Tillingham. Ok, so Bradwell is not exactly Clacton-on-Sea and without a pier or bucket & spade in site the 3rd XI targeted a strong performance to continue their pursuit of leaders Springfield 5ths.
The venue, the splendidly appointed De Grooth Cricket Ground, is owned by a Dutch ex-pro and the man himself made a pre-match appearance wishing both teams well, with the scorer missing the opportunity to question the main man about a potential bar extension to the clubhouse ready for next year’s visit (if he would have seen the state of the portaloo after a not to be named member of the GWCC team paid a visit he may have considered some new facilities too).
So on to the cricket and on a dry outfield Deano won the toss and elected to bat, thinking big runs and big bonus points to move closer to that hallowed top spot. Eaglesham Junior and Josh De’ath headed out to open the GWCC batting whilst the scorer tried to disentangle himself from the Col U-baiting Southend fan taking more interest in the opening day of the footie than the bat and ball activities in front of us. With a positive mentality and attitude our openers set about their task, and despite the loss of Eaglesham Junior for an unlucky golden duck, De’ath hit a couple of impressive boundaries with Cobb going for 17 off his second over. At this point things looked positive from a visitors point of view for the day ahead.
Unfortunately, things went downhill from there on. With the pitch slow and the ball stopping in the wicket a succession of Waltham batsman came and went, deceived by the pace of the pitch rather than the fairly average bowling. With the dependable Gavlar as always dropping anchor and providing a solid base to the innings, De’ath (14) and Eaglesham Senior (8) both perished off the medium pace of Lang whilst trying to push the innings on. With a youthful looking middle order of Fall, Brittain and Thorpe, building partnerships was crucial if a decent score was going to be put on the board. Alas, all succumbed cheaply to to the surprisingly deceptive pace of D Shipton, by far the outstanding performer on the day in either innings as bowling figures of 9-6-7-3 clearly testify. Only the warm beer from the local corner shop softened the pain for those looking on.
With the innings in severe danger of complete collapse at 39-6 the skipper’s head was spinning as much as the turbines looking down on the pitch. After flexing the batting order so far it was time for Deano himself and arriving at the crease the GWCC fans were hopeful of a solid partnership from this dependable duo with Gavlar still at the other end. However, despite some brief hope Harman soon holed out for 3, despite the ball initially appearing to be heading over the fielder and to the boundary (it must be noted that Tillingham caught everything offered to them in the field). Waltham’s best batsman on the day ended up being James Kent who scored 18 not out with impressive stroke play matched with some defiant defence. He needed a partner though and when Gavlar was bowled for 17, Tokley (5) and Elles (0) quickly followed thereafter, and the innings was all done at a very much below-par 81 all out. No bonus points for that one chaps…..
When the second innings starts prior to the tea being served you know something’s not gone quite right and soon afterwards Ashworth and Bailly were quickly back at the crease and in their stride, scoring steadily off the opening bowling pair of Brittain and Reed. With bellies full post-tea break the scoring rate quickened up in the warm haze of the late afternoon as Waltham heads sagged with inevitable defeat (and getting back to the a) Ashes or b) Pub, now on people’s minds). Both batsman fell in the 20’s dismissed by some clever bowling by Emily Thorpe (2.1-0-6-2) providing some positives on an otherwise undistinguished day for the team. With Tokley coming on and bowling two no balls with first two deliveries it was definitely not meant to be, and Tillingham subsequently cruised to an eight wicket victory before 5pm.
Not the best day at the office for the guys but a rare blip in an otherwise strong and consistent season so far. We go again against Oaklands next week where the promotion charge will begin again. The challenges of summer holidays and reduced availability will be another challenge to overcome but as always opportunities present themselves for new heroes to come to the fore! The match reporter will be watching from afar on his Kos sunbed.
