Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Oaklands 1st on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
After the quick trip to the seaside last weekend it was back to Fortress Hatfield Peverel for an important game against Oaklands 1st Xl on Saturday. Having won the toss and deciding to bat last week, Deano was happy when the Oaklands skipper won the toss and decided to do the same. No decision was needed to be made!
The Oaklands opening pair of Davies and Sullivan batted technically well and with patience as they faced a new young Great Waltham bowling combination of Brittain and Payne. The first dozen overs saw both players struggle with the strong wind to gain line and length but they contained the runs - 37 for 0 from 12 overs.
The tried and tested combination of Kent and Richards were now in the attack. After Kent's first over however, he couldn't get off quick enough and Deano made a sooner than planned bowling appearance in the 15th over! This saw the break through that the Green Caps were looking for. Sullivan was trapped leg before wicket and Oaklands were 50 for 1 from 15 overs. Davies too was dismissed in the same fashion and the fielding sides tails were now up.
Richards was bowling into the wind but able to find some control with the ball. With Viv's brother bowling with such accuracy this enabled Deano to pick up wicket three and four and Great Waltham were able to exert further control. Youngster Handley and Captain Ayris tried to move the run rate on but after a few boundaries the Duggan boys soon put pay to any real acceleration. Ayris returned to the pavilion having been caught Oscar Duggan bowled Archie Duggan - a real Kiwi combo. At this stage Oaklands were 118 for 7 from 35 overs. With the Green Caps wanting to gain maximum bowling points the Oaklands tail was mopped up by Archie Duggan and Grant Payne as Great Waltham were set 133 to win.
As always there was a touch of 'déjà vu' about the Green Caps innings. Early wickets lost followed by some lusty blows by the incoming experienced batsman and the runs being knocked off in about 20 overs. This game was no exception as Kent (4), Alfie Eaglesham (4) and Spen-Dog (11) all departed cheaply.
At the other end however Josh De'ath was building an impressive innings for himself with a sweetly struct 4 from Davies' opening delivery. The run rate was easily being managed and at 76 for 3 and with the arrival of Deano, it was only a matter of time before the game was won. It only took five overs for the remaining 56 runs to be knocked off by the fourth wicket pairing of De'ath (72) and Harman (30). Great Waltham 136 for 3 from 18.3 overs and a win by 7 wickets.
