Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 108 runs

Match report (Match report from the League website)

'Smallgains' is the pavilion at Cavey and that is exactly what the visitors Great Waltham left with after a fine captain's innings of 106 not out by L Shearcroft.

On a warm sunny day, winning a crucial toss, The visitors rued dropping Shearcroft on 0 and then 4. At the other end McClughen adopted an attacking approach, cleverly striking the ball in the air to avoid the ball having to furrow through outfield similar to the first cut at 'The Open'. Both openers continued untroubled and scoring at 4 an over for the first 10 overs. McClughen brought up a fine 50, eventually stumped for 65 of Reed attempting to increase the run rate, 127-1. Casson settled in quickly, busy running quick singles, twos. Waltham bowlers were holding the run rate below 5. The home captain bringing up a fine hundred with a over of the allocation left. Casson was bowled in the penultimate over by Chapman (M).

224 may have been short of what the projected score with 10 overs left, however it was their highest total of the season and with Waltham not surpassing 200 this season, the odds tilted in favour. This was further vindicated with an early wicket of Patel driving McClughen, brilliant caught two-handed by Casson diving high to his left. Waltham batters consolidating with Reed and Dhanjal, both looking set and one of the needing to replicate the home captains knock. A Shearcroft bowled an fine spell (4-28 off 8), however broke the partnership with a short ball that Reed would have been disappointed to have pulled to mid-off McClughen. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals and the result not in doubt. A cameo from Webb (22) halted the tempo of wickets.

Canvey winning emphatically by 108 and with others players returning, the future looks bright. For Waltham a poor game not to dwell or over analyse.

The sun is out and this time next week the WTC will be taking place in Southampton between the two best teams in the world.
