Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Burnham Sports I on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1.30pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by eight wickets.

Match report What a difference a week makes... It may be a 'long time' in political terms but in terms of cricketing fortunes a comprehensive 8 wicket victory is the perfect antidote to put the disappointment of last Saturday well and truly behind us.

Pedro has just scored to make it 1-0 to Barca... the day just gets better and better.

With the 1st XI bolstered by the return of Godding & Chapman, Burnham lost the toss and my decision to ask them to bat was met by a few raised eyebrows. In all honesty, winning (the toss) caught me by surprise but I did fancy our bowlers to make full use of the overhead conditions.

Bugger. Rooney has just made it 1-1. Good goal though.

The next 23.5 overs were something of a blur as Burnham simply capitulated. Clouty opened up and Smith - coming to the wicket on the back of two 50's - was effortlessly removed in the 1st over by some late swing that rattled his middle stump. Joel Whittaker (26) strolled confidently to the crease and went about his run scoring in typical fashion. The score quickly moved to 25-1 when Ahmed gave Rob some catching practice in the gully as Josh picked up his 1st wicket. Again, it was something of a gift. Josh - aside from his no-balls - was bowling beautifully and it came as no great surprise when Whittaker chopped on to his own stumps. Maybe he was a little unfortunate but as Allchin (eventually) strode purposefully to the wicket to replace him, he was very quickly sloping back to the pavillion after picking up a 1st ball duck. Josh cleaning him out with a ball that 'did a bit' but the extravagant drive was - at best - ill judged.

Burnham had imploded from 43-2 to 47-5. This time Clouty cleaning out Green with a bizarre combination of flight, swing and dip (?) as Green looked to drive one that simply wasn't there to drive. A pattern seemed to be emerging... The situation didn't call for the shot and we were grateful as much as anything.

Half time in the football: 1-1.

Hamilton was next to go as he ever-so-slightly mistimed a shot off the back-foot, cutting Ollie into the covers where Andy held a great low catch. Andy Elgar demonstrating once again that both in the covers (and between them) he'll always make the most of an opportunity... however 'hard'. Mothers lock up your daughters.

Ollie doubled-up in his next over by removing Robin Whittaker with an absolute pearler that nipped back to take the top of off-stump. A wicket that you can attribute more to the bowler than find fault with the batsman. Clouty continued to put his body on the line and he removed King as yours truly took a routine catch at mid/long off before lightning struck twice and Andy Stephens holed out in identical fashion to give Clouty his 4th wicket. 75-9.

Proving that there is some justice in the world, Clouty claimed a thoroughly well-deserved 5-for with his penultimate delivery... Thanks in no small part to some sharp glovework from Blooma. Burnham 77 all out.

In reply, it took just 13 overs for the required runs to be scored. The Burnham bowlers receiving more 'lusty blows' (mostly from Godders) than what Andy Elgar gets in a week.

Messi makes it 2-1. Poor positioning from Van Der Sar. United on the rack.

Sam looked comfortable and will be disappointed that - having cracked two splendid 4's in the same over - he went looking for one 'big shot' too many and Andy Stephens skittled him for 13. 23-1. Andy sauntered to the crease and gave everyone a ticket to the 'Gun Show' by lifting one into the field for six... demonstrating that he still had the strength & energy after a torrid, sleepless night.

Godders cracked/slogged an elegant/inelegant 44 - bizarrely his first 6 scoring shots were 5-4-2-1-6-3 - before tamely cutting to point. Blooma came in at No.4 and saw us across the finishing line with a couple of boundaries. At £4 a boundary... value for money.

Meanwhile, Chappy was still thinking about the carvery he could get for £6.95 rather than paying £8 for a sandwich.

Right... job done. We caught Burnham on a bad day and made them pay. I still think they're a very good side packed full of quality cricketers and I've no doubt they'll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

A lot of positives for us... 26 in all. I got a real sense of the team 'clicking' today... the balance of youth/experience was spot on. We just need to make sure we keep concentrating on our roles within the team, doing our jobs and we'll win more than we'll lose this season. There are still individual areas of improvement for ALL of us.

Villa. 3-1. Beautiful strike.

A week is a long time in politics... even longer in terms of Mid-Essex cricketing fortunes... roll on Brookweald.
