Hatfield Peverel 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 04 May 2013 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report A slightly puzzling decision by the opposing captain to bat after winning the toss, coupled with another fine bowling and fielding display enabled us to a comfortable 8 wicket win and an early finish.

The opposition were not as strong as we had imagined and there was pre-match talk of a weak team. Regardless of the strength we were facing, they still needed to be beaten and beaten well. Asked to bowl first on a flat, slow, low wicket, our bowlers were probing and challenging, especially David Clout. Bowling with control, swing and no less stamina (12 straight overs uphill), the opposition were never able to score more that 2.5 an over. David returning figures of 3 for 21 off 12 overs including 5 maidens.

The breakthrough however came via our esteemed leader - Swanie. This season reducing his run up and bowling with more loop and guile, I am making a bold early season prediction that he will take at least 20 plus league wickets. He lured the one batmen who looked liked he could bat, into hitting a full toss straight to Nindi at midwicket...class is permanent - luck is equally accepted with gratitude.

If Clouty had spreadheaded our bowling - others did not let up. Last week I was boasting about my spell of 2 for 2, this lasted precisely one week - another of the younger brigade Lewis Tucker finished with 4 for 2 off 3 overs, just awesome! Furthermore our catching is becoming...dare I say competent (admittedly none were difficult), however this is an area we know was below par last season.

Chasing 67 to win on a fine warm afternoon proved relatively comfortable. Some fine shots by Sam Harris and Nindi ensured there were no alarms, victory coming off the first ball of the 19th over. A special mention to Ryan and Sam Harman for making their 1st Team league débuts, both have bright futures ahead.

Next week sees our first home game - judging by the effort our new groundsman, I'm looking forward to strolling out and having a bat.

Have a great week - we are 13 more wins to promotion.
