Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Havering-Atte-Bower on Sat 25 May 2013 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 113 runs
Match report
A sublime maiden league century from Andy Elgar, followed by the first 5 wicket haul of the season from Dave Clout (5-44), gave us a comprehensive win that leaves us second in the table.
Having lost the toss we were invited to bat on a damp wicket which on occasions prevented the ball from carrying through. A change in the batting order with Dave Clout joining yours truly seemed to have been a master stoke as Dave hit his second ball for 4 and was looking comfortable when he mistimed a drive to mid-off, 25-1 off 8 overs. The next 7 overs appeared altered the balance of the game and we were in precarious position at 54-4 off 15 overs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the men. There is much talk about the younger players in the side who have talent to become very fine players, evidence of this with both Sam Harris and Josh Fitzwater winning the respective batting and bowling awards last season.
In previous despatches, I've reported on the fluent and composed Andy Elgar, without adding prolific or match winning. His innings played with calmness, maturity and high class stroke play (no I'm not referring to the other Englishman who scored his maiden hundred at Headingley). At no stage did he appear rushed or unsettled, reached his maiden league hundred to drive for six over long off! The next ball sailed in the same region, same result. When the 5th wicket was finally broken, Andy and Sam Harris had compiled a game changing partnership of 170.
In all great partnerships, the other partner (Sam Harris 48 not out) was quietly demonstrating his versatility by batting down the order, rotating the strike, combining gritty defence with fluent drives in the 'V'. At tea, there was a distinctive change in energy and momentum in both camps. To have had a side 4 down for 54, Havering must have thought they'd be chasing a score of 180 maximum.
Their task was made even harder as the irrepressible Josh Fitzwater removed their opener in the first over. Swinging the bowl late back into the right handlers, few of the Havering top order had the stomach for a fight. Josh bowling 7 straight overs returning 3-20.
At the other end older brother Ollie, complimented beautifully, bowling 7 tidy overs of late moment, until the final over rather tarnished his final figures - 2 for 34 off 8.
Havering we're falling behind the asking rate and their all-rounder (Hanif) started finding a few boundaries. Unlike last week, here was no resurrection of the innings. Dave Clout bowling with excellent control and movement, troubled all the batsmen and deserves all the plaudits for the season's first 5 wicket haul (5-44), the stumps being rattled on four occasions.
Our bowlers are doing a fabulous job and one or two of the batsmen are finding form, our catching needs improvement. However, that's three wins in four, we're second in the table...I'm just being picky.
Off to Rayleigh Fairview next week to keep the momentum going.
